Are you a fast or slow reader?
Unfortunately, I'm a slow reader. I have read only three books this year and it took me so much time! If I started reading a book, it would take me ages! Actually, in 2013 I attended courses on fast reading in Russian. Although the course cost considerable amount of money and I did my best to do all the tasks correctly, the outcome was unsatisfactory. To be frank, my sister can read as fast as Schumacher could drive. We have so many books at home. What's more, many of books I've bought recently haven't been read yet! So, I'd better listen to beloved podcasts to receive more information than from books for the same time.

How fast can you read a book?
5 years ago I found a book that was called "Два Капитана". It was a very thick book. At the beginning of reading, everything went well. I read 300 pages in 10 days. But then, when I reached the second part of this book where a girl started telling her story I realized that there were a lot of disagreements in plot. I noticed that many characters appeared from nowhere. So I had to come back to the pages I had already read before again and again, I read one sentence at least 5-6 times. It took me 4 month to finish reading. In the end I hated this book very much that I wanted to tear it.
What do you think what happened after this torturous reading afterwards? When I started reading other books I realized that I had to read them many times to understand a plot. I felt some obsessions, there were feelings that I forget to read somewhere.
Nowadays this sheet continues persuading me. I don't know what to do.
It's curious that it appears when I read only belles-lettres, when I read forums and sports sites, I feel great and enjoy reading.

Which language do you read them in? Are they in your native language? How is it possible that you cannot understand the plot of a book in your own language? I think you just don't have a good enough memory which allows you remembering names of characters. This is a problem. Maybe you need to choose books with a limited number of characters so that you don't have to get back to remind yourself of those characters?

Of course there are some complicated books which plots are incomprehensible. Don't read them. However, it seems to me that "Two Captains' is a pretty childish book to understand. Read simpler books for children and you will learn how to understand their plots step by step.

... it took me so much time!/took me so long!
If I started reading a book, it would take me ages! - If I start reading a book, it takes me ages!
Actually, in 2013 I attended courses on fast reading -... attended/took a speed reading course.
Although the course cost a considerable amount of money / Although it cost a lot and I did my best to do all the tasks correctly/properly/carefully, the outcome was unsatisfactory/I was disappointed/ not satisfied with the result/with the outcome/the result was a fail/a failure/a disappointment.
To be frank, And it is not a family trait(, either)/I can't say it's a family trait/I can't blame my genes/heredity as my sister can read as fast as Schumacher could drive. What makes the situation so sad/even more unpleasant for/to me, is that we are a bookish family and" We have so many books at home. What's more, many of the books I've bought recently (myself) haven't been read yet//I haven't read many of the newly bought/recently bought books!
So, to save (my) time, I'd better listen to beloved my favourite podcasts instead and get to receive more information from them than from books/than from reading in for the same time.

Are you a slow reader or a fast one?

I would say I'm a fast reader. My wife keeps telling me how she's amazed at the pace I read books. But that is true only for fiction books. With technical books I'm much slower. I think that the main reason for my speed is that I want to know what will happen in the book, so the quicker I'll read it, the sooner I'll know the facts. I used to like all sorts of fiction books, but these days I'm quite picky. I don't want waste my time reading something silly, so it makes me read faster as well since I need to read a bit of a book in order to understand is it good enough or not.

Do you read fast or slowly?

I read fast. Of course the race of my reading depends on contents and my goals. If I read a detective novel or something like that I read it fast. If I read a complicated book or a textbook I read it slowly. Sometimes I read serious books for a long time. It might take several months. Usually I don’t go these extremes so I read two books in a month. I don’t like being in a hurry.

Do you a rapid or slow reader?
It depends on a book I am reading. If the book is very interested I read it fast even in English. I just skip some difficult words and sentences. But if the book is not such exciting I will read it in English very slowly analysing every sentence or collocation taking pleasure in the process. In Russian, I read boring books very quickly just look them over indeed.

Are you a swift reader or a slow one?
I am a slow reader. I cannot read fast. I remember my classmates who could borrow a large volume of a book from their friends for a day and read it during 5-6 classes under their tables. I would have spent days to read such a thick book. Of course I am trying to read faster, or at least as fast as I can recognise words in the book, but often I need to reread some places which could be difficult. If there are a lot of names, I have to reread even previous pages to remind myself who is who. When it is a special book, for example, with technical or new text, I have to read it very slowly by rereading a lot of sentences or paragraphs for several times and still I never know whether I understand it completely or I could understand only separate words but not the meaning as a whole. Even now, when I read some small texts from textbooks I cannot answer all the questions to the text properly as I cannot memorise numbers, names and even events even though while reading it seems to me that I understand everything. I am surprised that there are people who can read books not only fast but they can remember everything what is written in them for rather long time. It is a wonder for me.
