Yet в значении "еще" и "уже"
Модератор: zymbronia
Здравствуйте! Я хотел бы знать разницу в переводе слова "yet" - когда оно переводится как "уже", а когда "еще". Я знаю например, что выражение "Feel old yet?" переводится "Уже чувствуешь себя старым?" Значит ли это что в вопросительных предложениях "yet" всегда переводится как "уже"? Например, как будут переводится следующие предложения:
Is she in school yet?
Is she yet in school?
She's in school yet.
И есть ли разница между первыми двумя ("in school yet" и "yet in school")?
Спасибо
Is she in school yet?
Is she yet in school?
She's in school yet.
И есть ли разница между первыми двумя ("in school yet" и "yet in school")?
Спасибо

В отрицательных контекстах: "ещё (не)" - not ... yet.
В утвердительных - смотрите употребления в словарях - в будущем контексте:
She is yet to go to school.
She has yet to go to school.
She will go to school yet.
Про остальные случаи ниже.
Никогда не говори "всегда". Но - да.)
1. Она уже в школе?
2. (винтажно-старорежимное*, игнорировать, использовать still) Она таки/всё ещё в школе?
3. (кяп, преимущественно американское**) Она таки/всё ещё в школе.

Collins COBUILD English Usage пишет:yet
1. used in negative sentences
You use yet in negative sentences to say that something has not happened up to the present time, although it probably will happen. In conversation and in less formal writing, you usually put yet at the end of a clause.
It isn't dark yet.
I haven't decided yet.
In formal writing, you can put yet immediately after not.
Computer technology has not yet reached its peak.
They have not yet set a date for the election.
2. 'have yet to'
Instead of saying that something 'has not yet happened', you can say that it has yet to happen. People often use this structure to show that they do not expect something to happen.
I have yet to meet a man I can trust.
Whether it will be a success has yet to be seen.
3. used in questions
You often use yet in questions when you are asking if something has happened. You put yet at the end of the clause.
Have you done that yet?
Have you had your lunch yet?
Many American speakers and some British speakers use the past simple in questions like these. They say, for example, 'Did you have your lunch yet?'
4. 'already'
Don't confuse yet with already. You use already at the end of a question to express surprise that something has happened sooner than expected.
Is he there already?
You mean you've been there already?
See already
5. 'still'
Don't use 'yet' to say that something is continuing to happen. Don't say, for example, 'I am yet waiting for my luggage'. The word you use is still.
He still doesn't understand.
Brian's toe is still badly swollen.
See still
6. 'just yet'
If you don't intend to do something just yet, you don't intend to do it immediately.
It is too risky to announce an increase in our charges just yet.
I'm not ready to retire just yet.
Указание 5. выше под спойлером, по-видимому, противоречит некоторым указанным в американских словарях значениям:
И вот тут, например, в разделе бритиш граммар:Random House Kernerman Webster's College Dictionary пишет:4. to the present moment; as previously; still: He came this morning, and he is here yet.
Сравни там же также:
Idioms:
as yet, so far; until this moment.
С этим всё понятно-регулярно.https://dictionary.cambridge.org/grammar/british-grammar/already-still-or-yet пишет: Already, yet or still?
We use still not yet or already to refer to the continuation of a situation:
I still meet my friends from my schooldays now and then. (I continue to meet my friends)
Not: I already meet my friends or I yet meet my friends.
Но есть и такое рядышком:
Так что нужно внимательно вчитаться в оттенки смысла.https://dictionary.cambridge.org/grammar/british-grammar/yet пишет:Yet with affirmative statements
When we use yet in affirmative statements, it shows that a situation is continuing, even when we might expect it not to continue:
There’s plenty of time yet. (even though you don’t think so)
We’ve got a lot more work to do yet. (even though you think we have finished)

Не, вообще нормально, но в какой-нибудь другой фразе. Типа:
I'm yet working on it. (I'm yet to finish.)
Но с этой школой вообще странно. Можно слова переставить, тогда лучше:
She's yet in school.

Судя по всему, чтобы yet звучало норм в утверждении вместо still, там положено быть этому самому элементу некоего противопоставления ожидаемому/мнению собеседника {No, contrary to what you might think (she has already left school), she is in school yet (she hasn't left school yet; she is still in school)}.
Отсюда эти уточнения от Кембриджа:
В этих примерах есть отчётливая обращённость в будущее.Yety пишет: ↑01 дек 2022, 02:51 https://dictionary.cambridge.org/gramma ... rammar/yet пишет:

Наверное, и в этот примере
возможно, подразумевается:

he is still at school = either he is still a pupil or he still hasn’t come back from school
Еще at the school может быть, нет?

Примеры со временем и делами для меня работают, потому что там противопоставление:
Да ладно/вообще-то, у нас еще до фига времени (работы).
То есть там значение "вообще-то ... еще". Такого встречается много, звучит естественно.
В примере he's here yet такого значения нет, и для меня он интуитивен только при перестановке слов:
He came this morning and he's yet here.
Я это подсознательно читаю как he's yet to leave, поэтому сова на глобус натягивается.

She is/has yet to go to school;
- союза yet, который про чистое противопоставление - в начале предложения:
Yet, she is in school.

...
4. eventually, in spite of everything: we'll convince him yet.

Meaning "still"
In predictions
• When yet is used in predictions about the future, translate using todavía or aún:
The economic crisis will go on for some time yet La crisis económica continuará todavía or aún algún tiempo
They will be a long time yet Todavía or Aún tardarán bastante en venir
Ага. Всё-таки, ещё пойдёт.
