Я не знаю, даже как это назвать: профессиями, социальным положением или как-то ещё. В чём разница между clerk, operator и attendant?

Someone who works in a shop selling goods to customers is not an 'attendant'. A person like this is called a shop assistant.
I asked the shop assistant for a receipt.

In American English, this person is called a sales clerk.
She worked as a sales clerk in a record store.

clerk - это госслужащий обычно, небольшой чиновник (а-ля титулярный советник)
operator, как правило, работает с обрудованием, машинами и т.д., от оператора ЭВМ до оператора лифта (или котельной.)
attendant , как правило, сотрудник, помогающий посетителям /пассажирам/и т.д., e.g. a car park attendat, a flight attendant etc.
