Practical English Usage (3 ed)
This use of they/them/their has existed for centuries, and is perfectly correct. It is most common in an informal style, but can also be found in formal written English. Here is an example from a British passport application form:
Dual nationality: if the child possesses the nationality or citizenship of another country they may lose this when they get a British Passport.
Oxford English Usage
The feminist movement has greatly intensified sensitivities in this area, and alternative devices often have to be found. When a gender-neutral pronoun or determiner (i.e. one that is free of grammatical gender) is needed, the options usually adopted are he or she (or his or her, etc.), or the plural forms they, their, themselves, etc.:
• Each client should take the advice of their estate agent, who will take into account the style of the property, [etc.] —Real Property Guide (Edinburgh), 1995
• Anyone who involves themselves in such issues does so for their own salvation —Big Issue, 1998.
This use of plural pronouns is not new, but a revival of a practice dating from the 16c and common in 19c literature
• Whenever a person says to you that they are as innocent as can be in all concerning money, look well after your own money, for they are dead certain to collar it, if they can —Dickens, 1853.

"Speakers of AmE resist this development more than speakers of BrE, in which the indeterminate they is already more or less standard. That it sets many literate Americans' teeth on edge is an unfortunate obstacle to what promises to be the ultimate solution to the problem."
c) Garner's Modern American Usage.
"In our 1996 survey, while 60 percent said that they had used sentences such as Someone has lost their gloves and A person at that level should not have to keep track of the hours they put in, 80 percent considered such usages to be errors, and only 16 percent said they would use them in formal contexts such as news reports or scholarly articles. Fully 70 percent, however, thought that these sentences were permissible in informal contexts"
c) The American Heritage Guide to Contemporary Usage and Style.

Washington Post (Bill Walsh, a Post copy editor since 1997, is the author of “Lapsing Into a Comma,” “The Elephants of Style” and “Yes, I Could Care Less.”)

There was one change, though, that I knew would cause controversy. For many years, I’ve been rooting for — but stopping short of employing — what is known as the singular they as the only sensible solution to English’s lack of a gender-neutral third-person singular personal pronoun. (Everyone has their own opinion about this.) He once filled that role, but a male default hasn’t been palatable for decades. Using she in a sort of linguistic affirmative action strikes me as patronizing. Alternating he and she is silly, as are he/she, (s)he and attempts at made-up pronouns. The only thing standing in the way of they has been the appearance of incorrectness — the lack of acceptance among educated readers.
What finally pushed me from acceptance to action on gender-neutral pronouns was the increasing visibility of gender-neutral people. The Post has run at least one profile of a person who identifies as neither male nor female and specifically requests they and the like instead of he or she. Trans and genderqueer awareness will raise difficult questions down the road, with some people requesting newly invented or even individually made-up pronouns. The New York Times, which unlike The Post routinely uses the honorifics Mr., Mrs., Miss and Ms., recently used the gender-neutral Mx. at one subject’s request. But simply allowing they for a gender-nonconforming person is a no-brainer. And once we’ve done that, why not allow it for the most awkward of those he or she situations that have troubled us for so many years?
I was a little surprised that the singular they has drawn stronger online reaction, both positive and negative, than the other style changes, especially because we are approaching it pretty cautiously. The stylebook entry retains the old advice to try to write around the problem, perhaps by changing singulars to plurals, before using the singular they as a last resort.
Even as we switch from distracting “normal people” (as Washingtonian magazine put it) with e-mail to distracting freaks like me with email, I suspect that the singular they will go largely unnoticed even by those who oppose it on principle. We’ve used it before, if inadvertently, and I’ve never heard a complaint.

н. l'écriture inclusive
https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Langage_%C3%A9pic%C3%A8ne
Возможно, такое давление со стороны феминисток и the LGBD community и существует, но, имхо, оно только дало небольшой дополнительный толчок в сторону they, но никак не может являться объяснением самого явления.the singular they is “the only sensible solution to English’s lack of a gender-neutral third-person singular personal pronoun.

Интересное явление в современном мире....a person who identifies as neither male nor female and specifically requests they and the like instead of he or she.

Fourteen-year-old J goes by the pronoun 'They' and lives with their parents in the suburbs of Chicago. J is exploring their gender identity while taking hormone blockers to postpone puberty. After two years of medication and therapy, J has to make a decision whether or not to transition.

Даже будучи предупрежденным, что "Fourteen-year-old J goes by the pronoun 'They'", при первом прочтении their непреодолимо соотнеслось с предшествующим одушевлённым сущ. ч. parents:

И singular "they" тоже обожаю, очень удобно, не то что he or she, где, кстати, с точки зрения равенства полов можно придраться к порядку слов, например -- почему не she or he?
