Ah, yes. However, I had forgotten the original sentence but not its lesson, because I didn't have much trouble understanding yours, even though it's longer and more convoluted. Not that I didn't have to read it twice, but only twice! When a building is finished, the scaffolding isn't needed anymore. It can be removed and forgotten.
I wrote a verse

acapnotic,
Once Fritz Leiber has been mentioned, here's one of his pieces of poetry:

P.S. I wonder: If you have read anything by E. Mayne Hull, what is it?

Once Fritz Leiber has been mentioned, here's one of his pieces of poetry:
And here's just an interesting fact (in publisher info) of his literary career:Far wiser beasts under far older stars
Have had your sickness, seen their hopes denied,
Sought God, fought Fate, pounded against the bars,
And like you, little ape, they some day died.

A good one. I see it's from Wanderer, once one of my favorite books. I read if probably a couple or three times then. Well, it was in the pre-Internet era, and I couldn't just go online any time and find something new.
No, I've only read her husband lately, a couple of his novels. His style is sometimes somewhat odd, as well as his characters and ideas. For example, in The Wizard of Linn you see a mankind that uses spaceships to travel around the Solar system and has colonies on Mars and Jupiter moons, but their weapons are bows, spears and swords, and their means of telecommunication smoke signals, mirrors and courier ships. Looks very weird, doesn't it? Even though they had inherited the spaceships from their remote ancestors, why weren't they equipped with radio? And if you can't make a gun, how can you maintain a colony on Europa? So sometimes I wondered if he had been in his right mind when he wrote all that. :)

Speaking of the Sci-Fi books written in the Golden Age of the genre, there're oodles of those resting on the dusty shelves of my extensive virtual archive. Some of them I once read through, some I tried to read and put aside, but most of the stuff hoarded there, seems to be doomed to stay unread where it is until the time comes for someone else to decide on their lot.
Anyway, now that you've mentioned the Wanderer as the book you read twice or maybe even three times, I simply can't but give it a try:) I don't think I would but for your appraisal of it. As for the verse, I chanced upon it somewhere else--where, I can't recall.
BTW, did you browse through the Prospero's Isle site (my second link in the previous comment)? In the S-F section I found quite a few short stories I haven't read before. There're a couple of stories written by Kingsley Amis in the "Sci-Fi drink" genre that was, as it is said there, invented by him. Searching for more of his work, Lucky Jim in particular, I found it on the RoyalLib site.

My appraisal dates back more than 20 years, so don't rely too much on it, lest you get disappointed. ;)
I almost never do so, and it has paid off quite a few times. For example, when I started reading Lord of Light by Zelazny, I pretty soon felt a strong temptation to drop it because the setting was strange and the plot unclear, and I began to feel bored. But it was already my rule not to give up easily, so I went on, gradually got used to the setting and came to grips with the story, got immersed in it, and eventually it turned out to be probably the best book I've read in the past year or two.
Never heard of him or of the genre. I'll take a look at his writing.

Once you're dead, there's no whatever reason
To comb your hair or shave your now unshaven face,
Or hurry anywhere you might be in/at,
Or worry 'bout any debts that have to be repaid.

Oh, there's kind of coziness on the graveyard,
Where every single square meter is someone's.
The living ones knew that they sometimes would die,
Whereas the dead ones knew not that they had already died.

Sorry for the grim topic I chose for my poetic, kind of, showing off as some may take it, but for me, just the means of keeping the ball rolling - one does have to kick it once in a while, doesn't they?.
I, for one, do love poetry and I do hope someone will add something, anything just to keep that ball rolling, just for the fun of it. Will anyone do it?:)

There are just not so many true poets around, so I'm afraid the bulk of the burden will remain yours. But why should you let it stop you?
Consider this :)Показать
Поэт! не дорожи любовию народной.
Восторженных похвал пройдет минутный шум;
Они в самом тебе. Ты сам свой высший суд;
Всех строже оценить умеешь ты свой труд.
Ты им доволен ли, взыскательный художник?
Доволен? Так пускай толпа его бранит
И плюет на алтарь, где твой огонь горит,
И в детской резвости колеблет твой треножник.

A man-eater's soul's always crying with pain,
He sincerely repents for his deeds.
Yet, if not by killing again and again
From where comes the food that he eats?
He sincerely repents for his deeds.
Yet, if not by killing again and again
From where comes the food that he eats?

LOL! Kind of the tongue always returns to the sore tooth?)))
Juliemiracle, I thought of "cannibal" and "ogre", and the rhyme "deeds - kids (he eats)" but decided against it.
Truth be told I didn't even know the meaning you had in mind - now I do know it, thanks to your comment, which I really appreciate :-)

I think I actually learned it earlier than the original meaning. I once watched a part of a TV show, sth like 'Love at First Sight'. And the participant, when asked what animal she could be, described herself as a man-eating tiger. The presenter made some joke about it, which I didn't quite get, and everyone giggled like it was some cheeky thing, so I gathered it was a double-entendre. I checked it and... it stuck in my memory. I didn't even think that man-eater is literally translated as людоед.

Now that I’ve come to think of it, do you think it will make someone think, reading the verse, of anything but a man who feeds on other human beings' flesh if I call him an anthropophagus? Will it not break the verse's rhythm then?))) Or should I stick to a (male) man-eater/maneater?Juliemiracle пишет: ↑12 янв 2022, 20:36 I didn't even think that man-eater is literally translated as людоед.

Обожаю поэзию Вадима Шефнера, которого никто не переводил на английский :-(
