Встретил в учебнике Swan'а такое предложение:
If we left early tomorrow morning, we would arrive before 12.00.
Подскажите, пожалуйста, чем объясняется возможность подобного использования времени, учитывая, что речь идет о завтрашнем днем?

А может и произойдет? Если это говорится на стадии обсуждения возможного времени отъезда/приезда?
Comp.: If we were to leave early in the morning, we would arrive (there) before noon.

God forfend! Nothing can be further from my mind:)
Я и сам в грамматике плаваю деревенскими саженками--куда там классический кроль или баттерфляй...
Для чего тогда примеры в учебнике если не для иллюстрации уже объясненного?
Просто категоричность "завтра не произойдет" (в контексте выбора возможного времени предстоящего выезда) чутка зацепила, только и всего--even if the use of the past tense (left) seems to be far more common to express the same meaning of doing something in the future hypothetical (or contractual) situation.

At the same time, the nearer the bone, the sweeter the meat--even when you're dead sure that you'll never get to that longed-for bone:)

Judging by your English pronunciation we were able to assess, you're very far from being that:-)

... yeverone.
Согласен, что 'маловероятная/воображаемая ситуация' не согласуется с категоричностью 'действие не произойдёт'.
.You're right. I ought to keep right out of this business, mainly for the sake of my children. It would be best if you left early tomorrow morning.' 'It's tomorrow already,' Sigrid said dully . She looked at the phosphorescent dial of her watch.
I haven't forgotten the snow. It's nine kilometres away and if it took me a day. Well, what's a day?” “We have no bread for tomorrow even. But I don't like to think of you out in this weather.” “If I left early tomorrow morning, I'd be back in the afternoon."
"It would be a good idea if I left early tomorrow morning on the second - class bus. Please open the door for me! I'll leave at four in the morning," I said. I left Tuxtla at four o'clock it seems. I came to get my flowers. The next time I looked, I ...
Употребление Second Condl для будущих возможных действий вместо простого First Condl, предполагает некоторый элемент отстраненности. Она может быть разной степени глубины, всё зависит от того, как кому случится услышать это предложение; кому-то - вплоть до невероятности наступления этих действий:
.This is the Second Conditional. We use it in situations where we think the “if” clause is unlikely to happen.
A: Let’s leave early tomorrow and get there in time for lunch!
B: Oh, let’s not leave too early. I hate getting up in the morning.
A: If we leave early we’ll avoid the rush hour. [Positive, enthusiastic suggestion]
B: Oh please, I really, really don’t want to get up before 10 …
A: But if we left early we would arrive before noon. [Losing hope; admitting defeat]
B: I don’t care. I’m not leaving early.
Однако эта отстраненность может проявляться просто в желании смягчить прямолинейность утверждения, добавив в него гипотетичности. Достаточно сравнить
Will you come if I ask you? и Would you come if I asked you?
И даже просто, чтобы высказывание звучало более вежливо, оставляя простор для свободной реакции собеседника:
В общем-то, можно было этой цитатой и ограничиться.)) Но попалась уже напоследок.)The Pragmatics of Politeness - Page 169
Geoffrey N. Leech · 2014
(i) Past tense—hypothetical
We have already noticed the very frequent use of the hypothetical or unreal past tense, particularly the past forms of the modal auxiliaries would, could (and sometimes {overpolite} might), which are often preferred to their nonpast equivalents will and can (and may). The sense of unreality is, of course, greatly reduced by pragmaticalization, and the past form is effectively an indicator of slightly greater tentativeness. But on the record, by adding the extra meaning of ‘This request belongs to the world of unreality’, S expresses the belief that the action is unlikely to be performed—allowing O an opportunity, again, for noncompliance. There is sometimes a faint sense of an unstated hypothetical condition; for example, Would you help me? (unlike Will you help me) can distance the request further by implying ‘Would you help me if I were to ask you?’.
...
The hypothetical mood of would is conveyed in subordinate clauses purely by the past tense: Would you mind if I left early tomorrow?
However, the present tense is sometimes used instead of the past tense here, as one of the consequences of pragmaticalization: Would you mind if I leave early tomorrow?
Так что
может звучать не только как безнадёжно-отчаянное 'эх, а могли бы...', но и как неуверенное, мечтательное, желательное, ненавязчивое, вежливое 'а вапщетааа,...'
.

Понятно также, что подобное сочетание форм может стать результатом backshift'a First Condl в прошедшем повествовании (sequence of tenses, whatever):
... tossed the letter on the table and took out his pocket watch. If he left early tomorrow morning, he could make it to Chipping Norton by noon.
... delighted by my interest. We had shared adventures like this before; he enjoyed them as much as I. He said that the cave was about eight miles away. If we left early tomorrow morning, we could reach the cave and return before nightfall. Before I could learn anything more about the silent sadhu, the cook stepped out from the kitchen and sounded a brass gong hanging from a tree limb ...

VictorB, о да, полностью согласен :) Чем больше узнаешь, тем больше понимаешь, сколько всего еще есть непознанного. Тут Яндекс опубликовал визуализированные результаты исследований региональных особенностей русского языка - видел кучу слов на родном языке, о значениях многих из которых я даже не мог догадаться (без контекста, по крайней мере :) И узнавал словечки, расхожие в т.ч. в регионе, откуда я родом :)
Yety, потрясающая информация, с удовольствием прочел. Спасибо! :)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/English_subjunctive
In English, the subjunctive is syntactic rather than inflectional, since there is no specific verb form for the subjunctive moon.
I think that the only time you can really realize that a past tense verb form is subjunctive is with BE. For ex.,
If I were you...
If she were to buy the book...
But in the nonpast form it is visible in all verbs but in the third person singular only:
It's crucial that he complete the report. (not completeS)
It's vital that she arrive on time. (not arriveS)
The two sentences
If we left early tomorrow morning, we would arrive before 12.00.
If we leave early tomorrow morning, we will arrive before 12.00.
are different only in that the first is suggestive, whereas the second is a more certain statement. The subjunctive mood has a looser connection to reality (here the reality of leaving early).
