Gantry,
IMHO, "pathways" (=trodden paths) would work better--I mean the rhythm--хоть это и не переулки... но это же не должен быть подстрочник :)

VictorB,

1) I liked your Greek hexameter in your version.
My version is not academic; it’s like chastushka with high beat frequency of four-lined couplets.

2) Thank you for the word pathways.
I wonder if poplars grow along pathways.

3) Your lines
I will walk along the tortuous alleys
Running in the shade of poplar trees.

I will walk or I will run?

Of course you understand what's running along what, but once you're into picking nits... If you mean tender words, you don't tell them but say/utter/whisper/murmur, etc.--which is note number One. Shall I go on? )))

VictorB,
Thank you for the remark on the word tell , you are right it sounds a bit too formal in this context. I guess the better word to express feelings and tenderness would be breathe

Breathe my, sweetie, something very tender,
Tender words I’ve never heard before.

It means to say quietly, so it might work... in the context of direct speech--before or after the quotes:
"There they are", Tim breathed./"I love you", Jane breathed./Ann breathed,"What are you doing?"
Also, it should be born in mind that the verb "to breathe" is used in the idiom "not breathe a word" (in the negative to encourage silence):
Don't worry. I won't breathe a word about this matter.
Please don't breathe a word about Bob and his problems.
Don't worry. I won't breathe a word of it.
https://idioms.thefreedictionary.com/not+breathe+a+word
Whether it has anything to do with expressing tenderness is up to you do decide, though. IMHO:)

I'm not dead sure, but isn't it somewhat tautological--since a shore is the land along the edge of a body of water? Again, IMHO:) Maybe, "To the yearlong warm and sunny shore"

VictorB,

I checked the verb "to breathe" in the British National Corpus (BNC), in The Random House Dictionary of the English Language (155 000 entries), also in the Roget's International Thesaurus (266 000 entries).
One of the many meanings of this verb is "to whisper" - (written) to say something very quietly. I used the word in this meaning.
About that comma, I think there is no need to use it.

Gantry, а если такое И. Бунина:

Осень листья темной краской метит:
не уйти им от своей судьбы!
Но светло и нежно небо светит
сквозь нагие черные дубы,
что-то неземное обещает,
к тишине уводит от забот -
и опять, опять душа прощает
промелькнувший, обманувший год!

Сегодня в сериале "По законам военного времени" услышал и как-то зацепило, что сразу взялся за перевод.
Мой вариант готов, но только после Вас:)

Gantry,
Вот Вам кладезь для таких заданий--стихотворные опусы Павла Белобрысова, главного героя Шефнеровской (Вадима Шефнера, писателя и поэта)"Лачуги Должника". Не смотрели сериал - не смотрите (очень мало, если вообще ничего, общего с романом). Не читали роман - strongly рекомендую:

VictorB,

* * *
After biting wind and frost
Warmed by fire I was lost.
And it wasn't very hard
For someone to steal my heart.

…Ah! I know whom to blame
In his eyes I saw that flame.
What I fear very much
He will soon return his catch.

Autumn stains the foliage with dark patterns:
Every leaf is destined to its lot!
But the sky glows warmly, soft and tender,
Through the half-bare branches of old oak,
Taking silently away from nagging worries,
Wondrous things foretelling to appear...
And again the soul forgives the passing
Yet another disappointing year!

LOL! Surely you're pulling my leg:)
If the author of the translation meant to make it a two-line folk verse, sung in a lively manner with accordion accompaniment, then he/she was no slouch doing it.
Whether its pace and rhyme, let alone the mood, have anything to do with the original, well... it's up to you to estimate its quality...
After all, who am I to judge what a good translation is when it comes to poetry.
When translating, I'm just trying to go in step with an original. To me the word choice is somewhat secondary.

Gantry,
Compare:

Two of us — me and my buddy
Giving gifts to everybody
(After biting wind and frost
Warmed by fire I was lost.)

You get daughter, you get son
Patriotic duty’s done
(And it wasn't very hard
For some'one to steal my heart.)

Gantry,
Re: Translation of Bunin's "Осень листья темной краской метит"

A minor edit has been made--deleted "the" in the fourth line--which not only made the verse's word count exactly 50,
but also, IMHO, improved the rhythm. So the final version will be:

Autumn stains the foliage with dark patterns:
Every leaf is destined to its lot!
But the sky glows warmly, soft and tender,
Through half-bare branches of old oak,
Taking silently away from nagging worries,
Wondrous things foretelling to appear...
And again the soul forgives the passing
Yet another disappointing year!

VictorB,
Thank you, very much! Verses that you post are so charming and heart touching.

We have a totally different approach to poetry translation.
You wrote: “To me the word choice is somewhat secondary”.

But to me the word choice (even rephrasing) is the main part of my experiments with poetry translation. I think the word choice should be very thorough and precise.

One small example:
Осень листья темной краской метит:
не уйти им от своей судьбы!

To me “листья темной краской метит” - means that autumn makes leaves, nature and people very sad. What is the color of sadness? Black, yellow, brown?

Thus my line would be:
Autumn paints leaves with sadness,
No one will miss its fate! Etc.

I don’t do word for word translation.
I understand, of course, that these exercises are not real poetry; they are exercises to practice translation skills.

Not to me. At least, I'm trying to make it read like poetry.
Well, you are you and I am I. You do your thing and I'll do mine:-)

By the way, François-Marie Arouet, mostly known under his pen name Voltaire, compared poetry with music stating that both are equally impossible to translate.
Anyway, what's common to music and poetry is melody. In my strong opinion, one of the main criteria for evaluating a translation of a poetic piece of writing is its capacity to be sung (mentally) to the same tune as that of the original
(you need an ear for that, though).
And the criterion for that (capacity) would be the meter, which is the basic rhythmic structure of lines in a verse or, in other words, rhythm as given by division into parts of equal duration. All that born in mind, I don't find translating poetry to be just a light entertainment. To me, it's also hard work, yet quite enjoyable. Whether it is a gainful activity for an ESL learner, I don't know.
However, but for you, I would've never even given it a go. Thanks for that:)
