It reminds me of a joke about a "smart" man. Perhaps, the joke from the movie is of that kind too.
'I outsmarted a taxi driver'.

'I gave him money but I didn't get in'.

the part about the grape is sarcasm. he is making an indirect comment about the price the guy was charging for apples ($2 apiece is about double what I pay nowadays and I live in a pricey area). 'outsmart' may not be the correct verb. If he were really to outsmart the seller, he would hand the apples back saying "No, thanks, your price is too high."
