I'm going to somehow follow into Mary May's footsteps and try to limit my writing to the confines of this blog.
I'm also going to make some comments about other forum posts that I find interesting, adding the links to the source posts, of course.

I'd like to explain what bothers me about 'Matilda'. Perhaps I'm old-fashioned, but I want kind children's stories. There may be some dark parts in many kids' stories, but you want to feel that the author doesn't approve of it. I find it very disturbing that the parents are completely indifferent to their own child. I find it alarming that the child is presented as a vigilante, casually taking revenge on adults, even for valid reasons. I cringe when I read about all those exaggerated acts of violence directed at kids by adults. Generally, you get the idea that nearly all adults (with rare exceptions) hate kids and are ready to inflict pain and misery on them.
I've read Dahl's bio - it's nearly as fascinating as story books, by the way, and I can see where a lot of those things have come from. But I'd rather such acts of self-analysis and sublimation were uttered in the confines of the Freudian couch, not in a book for children.
That said, the man certainly has a gift of spinning a word-web, and as an adult I find his life observations perceptive and his intertextuality references to books and poerty mind-refreshing. Still, the message of the book makes me cower.
Sorry for being so blunt.

Rampant cynicism

I used some of the "best books" lists to find a good "chaptered" book for my seven year old granddaughter. When Matilda by Roald Dahl arrived, I read about 1/4 of it. I was disappointed to find the portrayal of Matilda's parents grossly negative and much of the language used in the book is degrading of central characters. The first few pages derides parents who speak positively about their children who are really "disgusting little blisters," and the author says that such positive statements about offspring cause him to exclaim “bring us a basin”. It gets worse. The father of Matilda calls her an "ignorant little twit" and he tears pages out of library books. Even Matilda who is suppose to be admirably smart and a "miracle" worker, says, “Shut up you nut” to a noisy bird saying. "Hello" over and over again.
I am hopeful that reading is a positive growth-enhancing learning experience for my granddaughter; reading Matilda would expose her to language her parents and I do not want her using and to attitudes of disrespect and cynicism.

I knew it! I have an old lady's mind :) What I'm gonna be like when I'm really old? Probably an utter horror.
I confirm that language-wise the book is solid reading.

I've read one more book, this time in Russian. It's 'One Hundred Years of Solitude' by G.G. Marquez.
I don't know how to describe it because it's one of the most peculiar books I've ever read. It reminds me of the paintings by Salvador Dali which entrance you the more you scrutinise them. There's a raft of small and intricate details, beautiful and disgusting, clever and daft, shallow and deep, and you could lose yourself in this book trying to unravel them.
I used to look at paintings by Frida Kahlo, wondering what that school of art - magical realism - really meant. Now, after reading a magical-realism book, I feel I've finally grasped the idea.
Apart from its folk fairy-tale qualities spiced up with the history of Colombia, it's also a family saga, so I was reading and thinking about other diverse books of that type I've read (from the 'Forsyte Saga' by John Galsworthy to the 'Master of the Game' by Sydney Sheldon). It's amazing how every writer puts their own twist on the same genre.
I guess it was a very fitting book to begin a year and to end those New-Year holidays.

On a more serious note, do you have any decent forums in mind? I've checked out some of the vk and the gram groups, but it's not my cup of tea, really.
So far, I've dusted off my Free Dictionary Language Forums account (surprisingly, got the same nickname on it). Getting to know the place & planning to discuss language-related issues there.
I wouldn't mind chatting about learning efl and tefl on some Russian-speaking forum as well, but if nothing suitable comes up, so be it.

Дорогая Пружина,
как всегда, спасибо вам за поддержку и интересные беседы. Пусть вам сопутствует удача во всем.

Juliemiracle,

During my temporary ban, I took the time to get to know different aspects of a certain individual's personality and this person's various pursuits in their entirety much more intimately. It was a most eye-opening experience. Indeed, they can answer to any questions, so I have none left :) And yes, the forum management deserves such a jewel 100% - now I know that for sure. I wish this dream team all the best!

To whom it may concern,
I haven't written anything on the forum for a week because I'd been banned for 7 days. It wasn't some 'read-only' mode as I couldn't log on to my account.
I got a temporary ban for asking a question about a moderator's behaviour (in the thread specifically meant for such issues) and challenging their ability to do their job. In this 'personal' thread, my only message got scraped due to 'flooding and flaming' (you'll see the funny side of it if you know the exact definitions). So, don't even think you can write about anything in an open way there: you may get banned in the blink of an eye. Also, bear in mind that certain people have a lot of privileges on the forum, and if there's a conflict, only one side of it - an ordinary forum participant - will pay for that, even though both participants may have said or done something violating the rules.
I can't put up with such attitude and write only in the threads designated to me by certain people and only the things they'll be kind enough to let me write about. Under such conditions, I fail to see what's in it for me. In addition, I'm not ready to tolerate the militant ignorance and underhand personal attacks without any chance to defend myself. That's why I'll keep asking my questions in the complaint thread if I feel like it and writing wherever and what I find fit; consequently, I guess my next ban is only a matter of time. I'm pretty sure it won't be shown on my profile, either, so if I suddenly stop writing, that means I've been banned again. In that case, he-who-must-not-be-named (with the full support of the you-know-who) gets a gold star for that.
In conclusion, I'd like to say a few words of thanks for everything good that's happened to me on the old and the new efl forums over the years, so:
Goodbye and good luck to all the fascinating, smart and warm-hearted people I met here. It was a pleasure to get to know you - my fellow English lovers - and a privilege to be able to discuss learning EFL and TEFL with you. I'll miss you, guys!
