Добрый день!
Штудирую New Headway Upper-Int, ( 2014 года выпуска, в данный момент 10 Unit). Делаю упражнение из WorkBook (1 ex)
Задание: Rewrite the sentences to make them refer to the past
8 предложение: That will be John on the phone. Я написал: That could have been John on the phone. Правильный ответ: That will have been John on the phone.
2 вопроса.
1) Скажите, пожалуйста, почему правильный ответ такой? (можно чуточку подробнее как для тех, кто в танке)
2) Скажите, пожалуйста, если взять конкретно мой ответ, то когда такая фраза имеет место быть и когда она может быть использована?
(К слову все остальные примеры из этого упражнения я переписал правильно)
Заранее спасибо!)
Небольшая путаница с модальными глаголами, выражающими степени возможности

You can call him. He will have woken up by now. (= He must have woken up by now.)
It's too soon. He won't have received our invitation card yet. (= He can't have received our invitation card yet.)
В большинстве пособий это употребление обычно проходит под рубрикой FPS, но для лучшего понимания этот случай модального WILL стоит категорически отличать от временной формы FPS:By now, you will've reached your 18th year...
By now, I will've been dead many thousands of your years.
Lara, by now I am sure you will have discovered the clock I concealed.
By now your brother will have noticed the theft.Как видно по последнему примеру, идея послания из прошлого в будущее совсем не обязательна.))СпойлерПоказать

Совершенно в том же контексте - когда телефон уже перестал звонить, но ваше предположение could have been гораздо менее уверенное, чем с must или, тем более, will.

Here's a slightly different explanation:Yety пишет: ↑19 июл 2020, 12:50 Yety пишет: ↑01 июл 2018, 23:41

Модальный глагол "will" с перфектным инфинитивом употребляется для выражения обычного или повторного действия в прошлом и продолжающегося до настоящего момента:
It differs to anything you will have done before. – Это отличается от всего, что вы (обычно) делали ранее.
Will с перфектным инфинитивом также выражает уверенность, заключение, вывод, произошедшем в прошлом и имеющее отношение к текущему состоянию или действию:
Everything says it will have been done when I was out. – Всё указывает на то, что это было сделано когда меня не было.
Вообще, употребление модальных глаголов с перфектным инфинитивом--интереснейшая и очень полезная тема)))

It looks more like a different usage, not related to TS's question.
It seems even rarer than the usage discussed above.
There're two bones I have to pick with those who provided the explanation at the link:
🥩 the translations into Russian don't help at best, and are very often misleading;
🥩 there's no clearcut line drawn between primary and secondary meanings of modals there.
These two drawbacks combined can make it a little too hard for a learner to grasp the idea.
How is it different from -VictorB пишет: ↑21 июл 2020, 21:31 Модальный глагол "will" с перфектным инфинитивом употребляется для выражения обычного или повторного действия в прошлом и продолжающегося до настоящего момента:

It differs from anything you WOULD do before
?
Strangely enough, the context for this usage seems pretty much the same:
It is not like any other test that you will have done before, and I found it quite difficult!
This is studying at a higher level than many of you will have done before.
Dogsledding is an activity unlike any you will have done before.
We have no pre-conceived ideas of what roles you will have done before, but only that you must be genuinely enthusiastic about this role

Yety,
"anything you would do before" suggests hypothetical past situations where you might have to choose one way or another to act in;
whereas "anything you will have done before" suggests similar actual situations in the past when you already had to choose your way of acting in/had the experience of.
As for the Russian translation of the example sentences, to me, it was helpful in understanding the nuances of the usage--the way I did understand it: что вы делали ранее vs. что вы сделали бы ранее.
Whether I got it one hundred percent right or not doesn't really bother me since the grammar constructions are so rare that I've failed to find them used in books (seeing the context they are used in might help too)
Knowing that the both relate to the past will be just about enough for me, and enough is as good as a feast. So, I'm retreating from any further discussion on this particular point, I'm sorry(
The use of the preposition in "It differs to anything you will have done before" still puzzles me, though... Anyway, thanks for the comment (+1).

I meant the 'would' used to describe repeated past actions as in:
I would often go fishing with Dad when I was a boy - compare it with used to do with a similar meaning.
So, "anything you will have done before" in their example and "anything you would do before" sound pretty similar, the past reference being expressed through a perfect infinitive in the former case and the past form of the modal itself - in the latter.
On second thought, the difference between them might lie right here:
There's a certain time gap between what you would (often) do in the past and the present moment, which doesn't seem to be the case with will have done.
"Hypothetical past situations 'что вы сделали бы ранее'" would've been expressed with a perfect infinitive after would, as in Conditional III:
"anything you would have done before."
I was actually referring to the whole text at the link rather than the translation of those two particular example sentences.
The authors failed to draw a clear cut line between primary and secondary uses of modals with a perfect infinitive, and then this incoherence was further clouded by most ambiguous Russian equivalents. I'm talking about the text at the link in its entirety. A lot of interesting details, but little system.
Some of the examples quoted above were copied from books.
Don't be. =) You don't have to go on unless you choose to.
