Viverra, ой, а мне как раз вот эти лексические штучки очень нравятся. Я как раз за них Спикаут и уважаю. Ну, не знаю, что там такого непонятного? Особо тормозящих не было. Вот грамматика местами - да.

Я занимался в языковой школе по этому учебнику (1ed). Такого рода задания действительно сбивали с толку (ну можно догадаться ride a horse, но это ж заранее нужно знать, а есть всякие get on / hang out!).

It's called guided discovery and is considered to be very effective.

I believe it is. In my classes, I try to present 'grammar theory' via eliciting and guided discovery as often as I possibly can.

It's been a mixed bag for me...
But then again, I'm fairly old-school in general, so it might just be me.
It works well for demonstrating certain grammar points, true, but at the same time...
-- it tends to confuse the hell out of my students, and it often feels like a waste of everyone's time. So, I'm somewhat skeptical about the whole approach. Seems like one of those passing academic trends that don't always translate well into practice.

Easy-Breezy English,
well, no approach will suit each and every situation. Of course, this one has its limitations as well. There's no point in using guided discovery if there's nothing to discover - some things just need to be learned by heart, some - drilled. And there's also a time spent/efficiency ratio.

Easy-Breezy English,
I'm rereading 'The English Verb' by M. Lewis at the moment, and I really like his idea that grammar is divided into 'facts', 'patterns' and 'primary semantic distinctions'. You don't discover the facts, like 12 words that change from -f(e) to -ves in the plural; you present them (if necessary) and learn them by heart using techniques conducive to vocab retention.

Sounds interesting. Do you think you could cite a couple examples of patterns and semantic distinctions?Juliemiracle пишет: ↑05 фев 2020, 13:06 grammar is divided into 'facts', 'patterns' and 'primary semantic distinctions'.
I had no idea there were 12 of them. Neither did I know that beeves is an actual word.Juliemiracle пишет: ↑05 фев 2020, 13:06 You don't discover the facts, like 12 words that change from -f(e) to -ves in the plural

Easy-Breezy English,
according to M. Lewis, patterns are generative; also, they can be perceived and understood. An example he provides is the principles of constucting tag questions. However, he warns that there are 'linguistic fossils' which may conflict with those generative patterns. As far as I see it, 'aren't I?' tag could be classed as one of those 'fossils'.
As for primary semantic distinctions, these are the underlying principles which help us understand many patterns. Lewis says many of them are dichotomies and are concerned with meaning. For instance, there's a personal/impersonal dichotomy which we need to understand such patterns as who/which, (s)he/it, somebody/something etc. You often can't just explain them in a few words as they need both explaining and language exposure; you gradually build up your understanding of them via cyclical learning.
Is it the plural of 'beef'? My student once wrote rooves instead of roofs. Turned out it wasn't a mistake, stictly speaking, but a dated plural of this word. I believe someday such linguistic fossils as -f(e) to -ves are bound to disappear completely because language strives to become regular. At the same time, other irregularities will spring up for language never stands still.

Does he explain why some patterns are a lot more difficult to discern than others? Tag questions are easy, alright, but what about answering them?Juliemiracle пишет: ↑06 фев 2020, 12:36 patterns are generative; also, they can be perceived and understood
You don't want to do it, do you? Seems like it would be so much easier to just explain what the right answer should be, rather than torture students by making them figure it out on their own.
Ты перестала пить коньяк по утрам, отвечай — да или нет? ))
It could be that some people are just more inclined to think inductively and others deductively.

I feel that those a the primary semantic distinctions.Easy-Breezy English пишет: ↑07 фев 2020, 11:20 Does he explain why some patterns are a lot more difficult to discern than others?
It is emphasised that not all things in this book are for purely teaching reasons. The author says that some of them are for a teacher to have the whole picture and deeper understading, which doesn't mean that all these ideas should be presented to students as is.Easy-Breezy English пишет: ↑07 фев 2020, 11:20 Seems like it would be so much easier to just explain what the right answer should be, rather than torture students by making them figure it out on their own.
Anyway, I don't feel qualified enough to retell the book here. All I'm saying is subjective and my own interpretation. You should probably try to read it yourself -- you may have a totally different perception after reading it.
