Pearson publishing group sponsored study what ranged 4 skill + grammar with finer granularity than just A1/B2.

It is the scale in a range 10-90.

I recorded progress back in a past:

Код: Выделить всё

           2016-12      2017-05      2017-09
Speaking:  beg A1  17 | beg A2+ 35 | beg A2+ 37
Writing:   end A1  29 | end B1  50 | mid B1+ 55
Listening: mid B2  63 | mid B2+ 72 | mid B2+ 72
Reading:   mid B2+ 71 | beg C1  74 | beg C1  74
Grammar:   end B1  50 | end B1  50 | beg B1+ 52
I've spent time revising ticks for each objective and found that I haven't progressed any far from the end of 2017.

I need more time to polish progress (there are hundreds of items!). Currently I see my progress only in one field - a vocabulary size, which isn't directly covered by GSE scale.

So I'm going to post here problematic objectives until I master all required for B2+ on weekly schedule or so.

I'll post what I've learned to master the topic and ask for advice how I can creak it, what is required.

Эти тесты мусор, нужно самому себя оценивать под конкретные задачи. Хотите играть в тесты? Тогда как в них впишется что вы потратили кучу времени на фонетику?

The first one is Grammar topic, GSE 40, Modal verbs:

* Can deny possibility and ability in the past using couldn't

Examples:

* I couldn't go to the party.
* I couldn't swim when I was ten.
* Women couldn't vote in the 19th century.

============== My research ==============

Parrot:

* p160, Could is the only pure modal verb that can normally use on own to refer to past time:

Present: She can swim.
Past: She could already swim when she was six.

We use could to refer to past only for general abilities. For specific events we have to express this in another way (she managed / was able to prise the door open. NOT she could prise the door open.)

We can use other pure modal verbs to refer to past time by adding have + V3:

I must have forgotten to lock the door.

Swan:

* p82.3, past: She could read when she was four

We use could to talk about general ability in the past:

My grandmother could sing like an angel.
My last car could do 160mph.
In those days everybody could find a job.
It could be quite frightening if you were alone in our big old house.

Was/were able to is also possible, especially to talk about peaple's ability

She was able to read when she was four.

============= Question ===============

Two above grammar references talk only about a positive form. Where can I find about a negative form?

Where can I find free exercises? Post link or sentences to practice in a replay!

Lot's of sites provide exercises/quizzes on particular grammar topics/language skills; most of them are free.
Here's one of the numerous links to drill /check the knowledge of the English grammar, the modals (two-level difficulty quiz) included:
http://esl.fis.edu/grammar/index-q.htm
Is this what you're looking for?

Basically, you can analyze the information in your own post and the cited sources (p82.4, Swan) and come up with something like this:
You can use couldn't to deny possibility and ability in the past:
1.1. General:
* I couldn't swim when I was ten.
* Women couldn't vote in the 19th century.
1.2. Specific (to say that something did not happen on one occasion):
* I couldn't go to the party.
Note that we do not normally use could to say that somebody did something on one occasion. Instead, we use other expressions.

gavenkoa пишет: 10 фев 2020, 02:11 What important words are missing? Any corrections?
There are thousands of words which could randomly appear in a specific instruction for a specific medicine or disease. You won't know all of them ever.
What kind of corrections are you expecting from us? You well know that words have many meanings and they could be used differently depending on the purpose and specificity of the text. That is why those words you showed in your list could have some specific meaning in some specific texts. If you need to understand instructions for medical use of medicinal products, you must read a number of instructions on preparations you are interested in and just ask some specific questions in case some of them arise. I don't have the faintest how we could help you. Medicine is a very wide field to learn, and instructions are sometimes difficult to read even in your native language to say nothing of reading them in a foreign language.
Why do you need them? Are you going to change your profession?

Only general instructions. Haven't searched for real yet.

Collected useful phrases:
- Do I need to take this medication with food?
- Are there any foods, drinks, or other drugs that can change the strength or effectiveness of this medication?
- How long will I need to take this medication?
- Why is it important for me to follow a schedule while taking this medication?
- What should I do if I miss a dose?
- What are the common side effects of this medication?
- Can I crush my pills?
- What follow-up tests will I need to monitor the medication's effectiveness?
- What should I do if I experience an unexpected side effect to the medication?
- Take 2 pills in the morning and 2 pills in the evening.
- Take 1 pill at bedtime.
- Inject 24 units before breakfast and 12 units before dinner.

Are you saying about that on-line free questions to match the requirements of about a real GSE B2+?

Because to meet some specific questions, it could be enough to learn 150 medical terms, but as to a real medical test - I think it will require much more than that.

Anyway, I am still ignorant what GSE B2+ is. I will try to find at least an explanation what it is about and why one needs to know medical instructions.

gavenkoa, I imagine I saw that post, and even tried to find out where I could find the questions to answer, but I failed. Anyway, it is not about passing a real test, right? In that case, some topics won't be handy for you. If I were you, I would rather pay more attention to my professional training in terms of language, or to general English as it could be met more often in real life than medical instructions :)
If it is your hobby to read them, it is OK then :)

Like that. For example I dedicated time for an objective "Can spell own name and address" (GSE 14). It is funny when people discuss inversion and 3rd conditional but can't spell the street they live on ))

You need to download the brochure, like "Adult (Academic English)" from https://www.pearson.com/english/about/g ... tives.html for the list of objectives.

How often do you need to discuss and spell the name of your street? However, we could discuss the 3rd conditional here almost every day. This is the reason why we don't remember the name of our street, but remember the 3rd conditional :)
Now at last I noticed the button "download" because I could not see it before when I saw your post before and was wondering how you downloaded it. That button is very pale on my screen. I should specifically look for different spots on my screen to identify it. :)

gavenkoa, I woudn't even know that we need to use those kinds of alphabet to spell names. I usually use the common Ai, Bi, Ci, Di, I, etc. Are you sure that that GSE demands using that NATO alphabet?
I wouldn't ever remember it. It is not easy to remember the common alphabet. It is a task which I will never manage with. Do you really remember all those Papa Alpha Bravo Lima? I believe they use this type of alphabet when there is a great noise around, and in a calm situation you can use the common spelling which is in the common alphabet.
