Shōgun (Asian Saga: Chronological Order #1) by James Clavell
A bold English adventurer. An invincible Japanese warlord. A beautiful woman torn between two ways of life, two ways of love. All brought together in an extraordinary saga of a time and a place aflame with conflict, passion, ambition, lust, and the struggle for power.
Here is the world-famous novel of Japan that is the earliest book in James Clavell’s masterly Asian saga. Set in the year 1600, it tells the story of a bold English pilot whose ship was blown ashore in Japan, where he encountered two people who were to change his life: a warlord with his own quest for power, and a beautiful interpreter torn between two ways of life and two ways of love.
The principal figures are John Blackthorne, whose dream it is to be the first Englishman to circumnavigate the globe, to wrest control of the trade between Japan and China from Portuguese, and to return home a man of wealth and position; Toranaga, the most powerful feudal lord in Japan, who strives and schemes to seize ultimate power by becoming Shogun—the Supreme Military Dictator—and to unite the warring samurai fiefdoms under his own masterly and farsighted leadership; and the Lady Mariko, a Catholic convert whose conflicting loyalties to the Church and her country are compounded when she falls in love with Blackthorne, the barbarian intruder.
In dramatizing how a Westerner, the representative man of his time, comes to be altered by his exposure to an alien culture, Mr. Clavell provides a spellbinding depiction of a nation seething with violence and intrigue as it moves from the medieval world to the modern.
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest by Ken Kesey
Like George Orwell and Philip Wylie, Ken Kesey is concerned with man's battle to be himself in a world of increasing controls, the battle of joy and freedom against a society which fosters guilt and shame. His first novel, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, tells the story of a struggle between a man and a woman for the spirits and hearts of a group of people who have been defeated by the world.
The setting for these defeated lives is a mental institution. The teller of the story, a half-Indian and a long-time inmate, has made the most complete retreat from life of all of them; he will not talk, and he has fooled the staff into thinking he is deaf and dumb. But through his self-imposed protective fog he is an acute observer. His vision of the life around him seems to have a truth which is beyond the definitions of sanity or insanity. To him the world is run by an all-powerful "Combine." The hear of the war, the "Big Nurse," is the chief instrument of evil. She wields her insidious power over the men to destroy their wills and freeze them into mindless obedience.
Into this gray world comes McMurphy, a brawling, gambling man, full of spirit and a glorious lust for life. He is horrified by the docility with which the other men accept the rule of the Big Nurse and decides to fight her on her own terms. The battle begins, for him, as a lark - a way of winning the bets he has made with the men. And then, as he becomes more aware of the terrible dangers in it, and more committed to the others who have come to count on him for their own survival, his decision to go on is a heroic act of sacrifice and compassion.

Прочитала The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society двух авторов (непростая судьба у книги) и после посмотрела фильм. Книга понравилась больше, чем фильм, в фильме практически оставлена только лав стори, а в книге много рассказывается об оккупации Гёрнзи во время WW2. Мне интересна эта тема, how the other half переживала события Второй мировой.

GoodReads все-таки молодцы, очень часто помогают в выборе чего нужно и не нужно читать.
Полезный список хайповых книг whose popularity most likely exceeds their literary merit.
MOST BORING BOOK EVER!
Полностью согласен с
The Great Gatsby
On the Road
1984
A Game of Thrones
books by Joseph Conrad
books by Dan Brown
At the same time I wouldn't include the following novels there:
Cloud Atlas (rating 4.01)
A Prayer for Owen Meany (4.23)
To the Lighthouse (3.77), though I quite understand why this title is in there
In two minds about
The Magus (4.05)
Gravity's Rainbow (4.03) [this one is just extremely difficult to digest]
Curious thing that absolute majority of the books from the list above have really low ratings (below 4.00), so this must be pretty reliable source for 'choosing' your next book not to read.

Tai-Pan (Asian Saga: Chronological Order #2) by James Clavell
Set in the turbulent days of the founding of Hong Kong in the 1840s, Tai-Pan is the story of Dirk Struan, the ruler - the Tai-Pan - of the most powerful trading company in the Far East. He is also a pirate, an opium smuggler, and a master manipulator of men. This is the story of his fight to establish himself and his dynasty as the undisputed masters of the Orient.

Gai-Jin (Asian Saga: Book 3) by James Clavell
Gai-Jin (Japanese for "foreigner") is a 1993 novel by James Clavell, chronologically the third book in his Asian Saga, although it was the last to be published. Taking place about 20 years after the events of Tai-Pan, it chronicles the adventures of Malcolm Struan, the son of Culum and Tess Struan, in Japan. The story delves deeply into the political situation in Japan and the hostility Westerners faced there, and is loosely based on the Namamugi Incident and the subsequent Anglo-Satsuma War.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl
(listened to it while cutting meat)
A wealthy sociopathic slave-owner who has a fixation on candy invites a bunch of kids and their parents to his mansion-cum-factory. Little do the guests know that the creep is going to torture them with a fiendish delight. In a well-known psychopathic fashion the abuser shifts the blame for his crimes on the children: it only does them good if he maims them for their alleged misdeeds.
Am I the only one who has found this book disturbing?

Xander,
Have you managed to muddle through Gravity's Rainbow? I've tried to read it twice; invariably put the book back on the bookshelf, having quit after 150 pages. In my view, it is turgid, jumping around its goofy tangents, utterly unreadable and definitely overhyped.
