Интересно, что такой participle clause стал источником для забавной идиомы, в которой вообще нет никаких притяжательных местоимений и даже самого participle.)

:-J
Description: The J represents a person sticking his tongue inside his cheek. It implies the person is joking and might be used after a sarcastic comment.[/quote]
Abbreviation: TIC

Original version:
This expression originated in the fuller form put or thrust your tongue in your cheek, meaning ‘speak insincerely’. At one time, putting your tongue in your cheek could also be a gesture of contempt, but that shade of meaning has disappeared from the modern idiom.
First uses:
The term first appeared in print in 'The Fair Maid of Perth', by that inveterate coiner of phrases, Sir Walter Scott, 1828:
"The fellow who gave this all-hail thrust his tongue in his cheek to some scapegraces like himself."
A later citation from Richard Barham's The Ingoldsby Legends, 1845 is unambiguous though:
...Cried 'Superbe! Magnifique!' (With his tongue in his cheek)
Т.о.,
эволюция идиомы:
put/thrust one's tongue in one's cheek -> with one's tongue in one's cheek -> with tongue in cheek -> tongue in cheek -> tongue-in-cheek (adj., noun)

Примеры с participle clause - без participle и без местоимений:
“I promise, and hope to die, but only if I can see you there,” he smiled, tongue in cheek. I smiled too. “Good. I'm going to keep you here overnight.
“Wouldn't you like to know?” she smiled, tongue in cheek, removing his finger. “Shall we change the subject now? Tell me, did your father suffer from shellshock ...
Justin smiled back at him with a nod, and hugged him. "Friends." "So, how about you whip me up some eggs and bacon, friend?" Brian smiled, tongue in cheek.
В нередактируемых изданиях часто встречается даже не очень грамотное написание с дефисами не только в роли определения.
She smiled tongue-in-cheek and let go. “You're not going to just bat me aside with humor.” “Did you just split an infinitive, Miss Newspaper Reporter?”

Shouldn't it be "brow(s) knitted"?

Yety пишет: 13 ноя 2019, 22:48 Примеры с participle clause - без participle и без местоимений:

If it ain't got no participle then it ain't no damn participle clause.

Это просто noun phrase тоже играющая роль adverbial. То же самое можно сделать и с другими примерами. Пример из Michael Swan можно переписать так:

Hands high, the dancers circle to the right.

Michelangelo пишет: 14 ноя 2019, 09:33 в словаре даны три формы knit - knit - knit, в то время как fit - fitted - fitted, т.е. первое - неправильный глагол, второе - правильный глагол.

Словари бывают разные. Merriam Webster's дает для fit нерегулярную форму:

https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/fit

А для knit все словари дают и регулярную:

Возможно, надо было поставить кавычки. Оборот назвал как "participle clause" вслед за вами, чтоб не перечить и подчеркнуть структурную связь между вариантами, - до этого обзывал его абсолютным/независимым оборотом/конструкцией.

Как абсолютный оборот, он имеет много вариантов образования, в том числе и с опущенным причастием:
Modern English, Marcella Frank пишет:An absolute construction contains a 'subject' that is unchanged from the form it has in a full sentence. (For this reason, it is sometimes called a nominative absolute.) In the predicate, the finite verb is changed to a participle, or, if the verb is be, it may be omitted entirely.

¢ Absolute construction with participle:
The elevator being out of order, everyone had to walk.
The rain having already begun, they decided to call off the concert in the park.

"¢ Absolute construction without participle:
Being is implied before the following complements used as predicates of absolute constructions:
A predicate noun – His book now a best seller, he felt pleased with the world.
A predicate adjective – His book now famous, he felt pleased with the world.
An adverb – His long work finally over, he felt pleased with the world.
A prepositional phrase – His book now on sale at all bookstores, he felt pleased with the world.

"¢ Absolute constructions with infinitives:
Infinitives may also function as the verbs in absolute constructions. In many cases, these infinitives might be viewed as the second part of the idiom be to, used in the sense of part of a future plan, arrangement, or requirement.

They decided to row all night, all the men to take turns.
(The absolute construction is the equivalent of the sentence "All the men were to take turns.")
All his money was left to his children, each to receive an equal share.
The infinitives in such absolute constructions may alternating with –ing participles if there is no desire to stress future action:
They decided to row all night, all the men taking turns.

"¢ Absolute constructions introduced by with:
The word with (or its negative without) may initiate an absolute construction, making the construction technically a prepositional phrase and thereby relating it grammatically to the rest of the sentence.

Such with absolutes generally have the same kinds of predicates as absolutes without with.
The ocean looks very beautiful with the moonlight glimmering on its surface.
With half the work still unfinished, she became frantic about the lack of time.

These with absolutes sometimes differ from simple prepositional phrases merely by the position of the participle.
With absolute construction: with arms outstretched, with a sneer barely suppressed
With prepositional phrase: with outstretched arms, with a barely suppressed sneer
(In the absolute constructions, "with" can be omitted; in the prepositional constructions, "with" cannot be omitted.)

Думаю, гораздо важнее увидеть генетическую связь между таким 'participle clause with its own subject' и независимым оборотом 'absolute clause without a participle', чем опознать hands high или his brows up как noun phrase, пусть и в роли adverbial:
She blinked hard and her jaw worked. “What do you want, Adam?” Incredulous, he stared at her, his mouth open, his brows up. “You're still angry,” he accused.
Можно подсказать, где такие сочетания называются noun phrase - для повышения образованности?

Не нашёл там описания случая или примера, который бы соответствовал absolute nominative 'participle-less' clause вроде his mouth open, his brows up.
Можно конкретно ткнуть мордой лица?

И, также, можно проверить, насколько эти обороты могут быть определены как noun phrases при помощи предлагаемого по ссылке теста:
“The tall mountain was very large.”
“The highway at rush hour can be frantic.”
“The oranges that fell from the orange tree are delicious.”
A good way to test whether or not a phrase is a noun phrase is to replace the phrase with a pronoun and see if the sentence is still grammatically correct. For example, in all three examples provided above, the noun phrase can be successfully replaced with a pronoun:
It was very large.”
It can be frantic.”
They are delicious.”

Я вот смотрю на определение в The American Heritage и вроде подходит:

A phrase whose head is a noun

С другой стороны по ссылке на грамматику:
Noun phrases are groups of two or more words within a sentence that function grammatically as nouns

А у нас functions как adverb. Возможно я был неправ.

Харбин Хэйлунцзян пишет: 14 ноя 2019, 23:40 A phrase whose head is a noun

Sometimes a noun phrase can also function as an adjunct of the main clause predicate, thus taking on an adverbial function, e.g.
Most days I read the newspaper.
She has been studying all night.
Но в наших примерах целое придаточное предложение "сопутствующих обстоятельств", свёрнутое в независимый оборот.

Там в пространной цитате выше подчеркнул забавную деталь: то, чем это сочетание является (независимым оборотом или зависимой prepositional [noun] phrase), зависит от порядка слов:
- (with) arms open - absolute construction introduced by with (can be omitted);
- with open arms - prepositional [noun] phrase (prep. cannot be omitted).
