Word associations and organization of the mental lexicon in language learners.
Two groups of learners of English with intermediate and
advanced levels of proficiency participated in the study. Respondents completed a WAT
in English and in their native language. Following Fitzpatrick’s (2006) and Wolter’s
(2001) recommendations, prompt words for the test were carefully selected based on their
frequency, class, degree of abstractness/concreteness, and versatility of potential
associations.
The intermediate group showed a higher preference for paradigmatic associations
than the advanced group, while the proportion of syntagmatic associations was similar in
both groups. Thus, the idea of the syntagmatic-paradigmatic shift in non-native speakers
correlated with increasing proficiency has not been upheld in this study, which concurs
with the research carried out by Wolter (2001), Fitzpatrick (2006), and Nissen and
Henriksen (2006). Contrary to the previous studies (Meara, 1982), higher preference for
phonological associations was registered among higher-level students.
Lack of inter-group homogeneity in responses was an intriguing find. Anomalous
associative patterns were noted in some subjects. The influence of individual associative
preferences on mental links between words was further confirmed by analyzing the
results of the WAT in the subjects’ native language. A strong correlation in associative behavior in L1 and L2
has been demonstrated. It appears reasonable to suggest that even though there might be
general patterns in word-association behavior, individual associative preferences play a
significant role in the organization of the mental lexicon, and should not be disregarded,
as is noted by Fitzpatrick (2006, 2007) and Higginbotham (2010).
(WAT -word association test)
