https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hector_Barbossa#Fictional_character_biography пишет:Information concerning Barbossa's childhood and youth stem from actor Geoffrey Rush, who devised a backstory for the character in order to portray him more convincingly. According to Rush, Barbossa was born to an impoverished Irish noblewoman by an unknown father and hailed from the West Country in England, a fact that is also deduced by Jack Sparrow based upon his accent in The Price of Freedom.[11]
the West CountryПоказать
The West Country is a loosely defined area of south-western England. The term usually encompasses the historic counties of (from west to east) Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, and Somerset, and is often extended to include Wiltshire and Gloucestershire, in the South West region. Some definitions also include Herefordshire.

- В словаре без пометы, в отличие от его синонима slake, для пояснения которого и используется quench:If someone who is thirsty quenches their thirst, they lose their thirst by having a drink.
[V ] He stopped to quench his thirst at a stream.
Quench the fire with water. Syn: put out , extinguish
Syn: cool 3.
The steel was quenched with water. —
He stopped and quenched his thirst at a spring. Syn: satisfy , slake
to quench a rebellion — подавить восстание
His praise quenches all desire to read the book. —
If you slake your thirst, you drink something that stops you being thirsty. [LITERARY]
[V ] I slaked my thirst with three cans of Coke.
1) quench or satisfy (one's thirst)
slake your thirst with citron presséСпойлерПоказать■ satisfy (desires)
restaurants worked to slake the Italian obsession with food

Parched by the sun.
Parched lips - это вообще on the tip of your tongue.)
The clouds gathered and showers poured down upon the parched earth.
...a hill of parched brown grass.
https://getyarn.io/yarn-find?text=parchedIf you say that you are parched, you mean that you are very thirsty. [INFORMAL]

Proficiency.

I associate it with parchment (пергамент). So, I in my mind's eye the parched lips are

Juliemiracle,
I knew the word parchment, but it wasn't enough for me to build this mental link.

Oh NOOO!
I was surprised flummoxed to find out just now there's no verified connection between the two. It was one of those disappointments of a lifetime, just like the one when yety accidentally discovered that the Russian "подушка" and "под ушком" are NOT related whatsoever.=)
A BLEND!!!parchment пишет:Origin: Middle English: from Old French parchemin, from a blend of late Latin pergamina ‘writing material from Pergamum’ and Parthica pellis ‘Parthian skin’ (a kind of scarlet leather)
OF UNKNOWN ORIGIN! you gotta be kidding me!parch пишет:Origin: late Middle English: of unknown origin

Yety,
I sort of suspected it because they're so different, but it doesn't matter. It's just my personal associations, not based on etymology :)

Juliemiracle,
I understand that. But I used to be so sure about that in yety's green years that when you reminded me about these associations and I checked it, it came as a sad surprise.
Yety should've known better.=)
BTW, there're some tentative educated guesses here, not so negative ones (of *uncertain* instead of 'unknown' origin):
PS There's also some more info about parchment there, somewhat different.

So, 'tentative', but - Klein. I can live with that.:)parch (v.), etymonline пишет: late 14c., "to roast or dry" (peas, beans, corn, etc.), of uncertain origin.
Klein and OED reject derivations from Old North French perchier (Old French percer) "to pierce" and Latin persiccare "to dry thoroughly."
Barnhart suggests possibly from Middle English perchen, variant of perishen "to perish" (see perish).
Klein "tentatively" suggests a back-formation from parchment.
Surname Parchecorn is attested from mid-14c.
Meaning "to dry with excessive heat" is mid-15c.
PS There's also some more info about parchment there, somewhat different.
