Every learner knows that In English, there are lots of words/terms which have no direct equivalents in Russian.
To translate these, you need to use either a word with a different meaning or a word combination.
For examples, "amber", relating to street-traffic control lights, becomes, "желтый", "hair-pencil" becomes "тонкая кисть для акварели", and, say, "paperback"-- "книга в бумажной обложке ".
There's no problem, thanks to Mr. Google, finding a link to a reliable online source to at least guess the Russian equivalent to almost any English culture-specific lexical unit.
At the same time, hard as I tried--typing all possible search queries--I couldn't find a link to what may be called a systematic, more or less, reference work containing a list of Russian culture-specific words (in alphabetical order or thematically), giving their meaning/translation in/into English.
I'm wondering if anyone could help me in my quest.

And what use is this? When you translate, you need to know what people call this or that, not some words from a dictionary ) And yes, in some cases you can just transliterate )
Also, the dictionary is a (big) bit outdated )

ellina,
Gastronomically, a bagel (Yiddish) is a glazed yeast-raised doughnut-shaped roll with hard crust whereas a bublik is a ring of yeast-leavened wheat dough that has been boiled in water for a short time before baking. Anyway, it is absolutely unconstructive a discussion as far as my request goes.. Thanks, though)

VictorB,
the dictionary you've linked to is basically a subset of multitran.
I did check a dozen or so random entries and they're all available there.
Of course multitran, being an unmoderated wiki,is often incorrect and/or misleading.
Still, you can hardly beat it as a source of ideas,
which can (and should!) be confirmed or rejected using monolingual dictionaries.
Btw,in your pdf I found advisee and allottee but no bribee for some reason )
Kind_Punk,what about замочить в сортире ? )
(multitran suggests Runglish version only.)

Есть такая книжка:

Тоже, конечно, уже не рубежи знания, но в исполнении Палажченко - неувядаемая классика.

Easy-Breezy English,
Thanks for the name new to me. Now that I've learned that Pavel Palazhchenko was Gorbachev's interpreter in the late 1980s and early 1990s, I'll do my best to get the book. I clearly remember Gorby's incoherent, frustrating verbosity--you could hardly grasp the ideas drowned in it. Bearing in mind the massive popularity he enjoyed in the English-speaking world, his interpreter must have been a true virtuoso in Russian-to-English translation. So far, I'm going to try the HTML version of the book I've just got. Thanks again and have a nice day!

VictorB,
We tried our best... you know the rest :) (c) and other truly genious ideas.
I totally agree with Easy-Breezy English: the book's worth reading.

What do you like about the book? I remember I flicked through it in a book store a few months ago (or thereabouts) but ended up not buying it. I got both volumes as a present eventually but never got round to actually reading either. Quite a lot of entries that I randomly checked seem obvious or boring.Juliemiracle пишет: ↑20 июл 2019, 13:49 I totally agree with Easy-Breezy English: the book's worth reading.

Eager Beaver,
come to think of it, I read it many years ago as a student and not 100% of it, that's for sure. But at that time it struck me as a fantastic book, especially if you're a furure interpreter. Perhaps if I reread it today, I wouldn't be that impressed, who knows?

Палажченко is a legend. I'd read the book just for that. And, just like Juliemiracle said, it depends on what you are doing. For a number of years I worked as a translator for an information agency, имя которого не будет помянуто всуе, so a lot of that stuff resonates with what I had to deal with.

tourist,
Lol! A knee-jerk reaction seems to be uncontrollable both ways ) As for the book, I found out that it costs nearly as much as a paperback Oxford Thesaurus (almost one thousand pages) my girlfriend had bought in Findland as a present. You don't think I'm such a spendthrift, do you? Already having had an HTML and read half of it...

probably not ...You don't think I'm such a spendthrift, do you?
It's just I know someone who's unshakable belief is:
Why would I need free, easily available stuff when I can just go and buy it!
