Did he really? LOL! So that's where his famous "always do sober what you said you'd do drunk" came from:-)Easy-Breezy English пишет: ↑11 июл 2019, 16:27 Hemingway actually made it a point to never drink before or while writing.

Ha ha ha! That's a great one!
Frantically trying to take stock of all the daring ideas I've ever had while under the influence.
BTW, did you know that one of Hemingway's sons actually went transgender? Ironic, isn't it? Or not entirely unexpected, I guess...

There are a few people on the forum who invariably give the impression of being stoned.Easy-Breezy English пишет: ↑11 июл 2019, 18:44 That would actually be an interesting forum-wide experiment to stage.

Frankly, I wasn't impressed by American Pastoral either, to say the least. The last page though was brilliant, suddenly the whole book started to seem worth a read.Easy-Breezy English пишет: ↑09 июл 2019, 02:44 Honestly, I was a lot more impressed by The Human Stain, but we'll see.
A fat thank you for such a vivid idiom.
Not at all! Just bear in mind that I didn't, as much as I wanted to, specifically recommend reading any of above mentioned authors. If I were to, I'd say: go for Wallace, or Dostoyevsky. They are considerably easier to enjoy. )))

You needn't. I've just read about it in Wikipedia and don't think it's anything special. It's about the weather in August in that place.Easy-Breezy English пишет: ↑12 июл 2019, 15:27 I'll try my best to resist the temptation of googling it. :-)

Not that I had to, but just thought, "Why not?" :) But I saved you some disappointment, didn't I? It was a good deed actually.

FINALLY finished it. I think this is the longest it’s ever taken me to read a fiction book. Parts of it were mind-numbingly dull beyond any reason. I literally had to force myself to drag my way through it, but I prevailed in the end. So, hooray for me.
So, what do you think the message is? That you can’t ever know another person? That you can’t even truly know thyself? That you can’t control reality and should never attempt to? That you can't pigeonhole others into your version of the universe? What?

Light in August means 'p__________t'. It's a slang term for 'p___________y'.Easy-Breezy English пишет: ↑12 июл 2019, 15:27 I'll try my best to resist the temptation of googling it. :-)
There are certainly layers of messages with various weights there. I feel out of my depth trying to summarize it, don't know how to put images in my mind into relevant words. There's surely should be an apt & concise idiom to describe the main idea, but I only managed to come up with the following mix: backseat driver stepping on someone's toes one at a time, finally breaking the camel's back with yet another polished, shiny albeit nearly invisible straw; silently yelling 'What the fork is going on!!???'.
Just thought of a better one:
The road to hell is paved with good intentions.
The first meaning is not quite related to the main point of the novel, but the (c) another interpretation of the proverb means that trying to do something good often has unintended consequences which make things worse.

Xander, you are quite a poet. :-)
The Swede and his father are clearly being punished for something. Ok, I understand the father, but is the Swede in the same category?
I guess the punishment follows their indulgence in pursuing a seemingly clear-cut, easily controllable and comfy idea of reality. Roth might have wanted to communicate that life is not reducible to that shallow model. However, this message would be so clichéd that I wonder if there’s something else there that I’m missing.
Could it be that Roth’s intention was to show that life is simply chaotic, absurd, and nothing more? That’s certainly the impression I got after reading The Human Stain. Something along the lines of McCarthy’s infatuation with pure violence. The beauty of destructiveness and absurdity.

And you are quite kidding, right? ))
You're giving my memory too much credit. ) The fork moment blurred almost everything else out of the picture ...Easy-Breezy English пишет: ↑12 авг 2019, 11:41 Ok, I understand the father, but is the Swede in the same category?
Swede is the son, right? Hell of a wonderkid? Can't he be some sort of a collateral damage?
Yes, that's right, cliched. There's nothing new under the sun. Maybe it was a multi-layered message from Roth to some people who annoyed the hell out of him.Easy-Breezy English пишет: ↑12 авг 2019, 11:41 this message would be so clichéd that I wonder if there’s something else there that I’m missing
Not the impression I got. The whole plot seemed to be extremely well-thought out, though causes of certain events were left unexplained, just as other connections between them. But on the surface level the story might look chaotic indeed.Easy-Breezy English пишет: ↑12 авг 2019, 11:41 Could it be that Roth’s intention was to show that life is simply chaotic, absurd, and nothing more?
