Easy-Breezy English,
I'm through less than a third of the book, but its insights into the English psyche (like the logic behind and the choreography of the famous weather-speak or the English humour and its impact) are revealing and captivating. And, as I've said before, the language is great as well, at least to my mind.

Juliemiracle, the book's been on my list for a while. I started reading it last year, read about 150 pages, but gave up. I failed to strike a balance between learning and enjoying the book. I could not help writing down all the new expressions and idioms and in the end I just got too tired.

Irina,
I'm highlighting everything that's of interest to me in my pdf, but I don't try to learn it by heart. I do it with almost every book I read. It helps me to read slower: being a book-junkie, if I don't slow down intentionally, I may well abandon my sleep an swallow a book without paying attention to its finest details. At times I leaf through the books I've read and have a look at the highlighted phrases (getting utterly surprised at how simple/completely unknown to me some of them look :) However, I try not to take it all too seriously.

Irina,
one thing that's good about this book is that many of her words keep repeating -- I even saw one book reviewer fume about that. He's obviously not an English teacher: we scream at the possibility of unintentional recycling :)

Juliemiracle, have you finished the book? How does it feel to be an expert on Englishness? :)

Eager Beaver,
yes, I have :)
As for your second question, you'd better ask tourist :)
I loved everything about this book although I must admit it wasn't that easy to get into. While I was reading, I kept puzzling over the fact how similar and yet utterly different our cultures are.
BTW, how's your reading going?
I'm currently having another go at Samin Nosrat (as with Kate Fox, I started it in winter but was up to my eyes in work and dropped it) and finding it absolutely fascinating. Not going to recommend it to you, though :)

This is what I was thinking as well. Do you know any similar books/research on typical Russianness?Juliemiracle пишет: ↑03 авг 2019, 16:50 While I was reading, I kept puzzling over the fact how similar and yet utterly different our cultures are.
(Un)fortunately, I'm still reading. This is not one of those books you can't (or you can but you probably shouldn't) swallow overnight.

Instead of reading yet another stupid and useless fiction books full of rare and unnecessary words, you, guys, had better grab something like "21 Success Secrets of Self-Made Millionaires", or "Think and Grow Rich".
. I'd join :)

They completely changed my life/lifestyle.
Ok, I get it. I wish you, guys, good luck reading Harry Potter.

Weren't you the one complaining about the inadequacy (or should I say paucity?) of your vocabulary in one of the threads on this forum? No? Probably just my imagination...

The point here is, there are two types of books:Dragon27 пишет: ↑05 окт 2019, 14:51Weren't you the one complaining about the inadequacy of your vocabulary in one of the threads on this forum? No? Probably just my imagination...
* you read and learn new words,
* you read, learn something valuable and learn new words.
Fiction sucks, in my opinion. That's it.

What have you been reading, then?
No, you initial point was a different one. Otherwise there was no need to point out that these useless fiction books contain "rare and unnecessary words". Of course, you can read real life fantasy your self-improvement books instead if they also contain these "rare and unnecessary words" if you still want to improve your vocabulary.
But I would personally urge you to reconsider your reading habits in light of the results of this little research:
