Some related info:
There is this woman ,Anne Robinson, presenter of "The Weakest Link" game show.(British version)
She knew literally unlimited number of synonyms for stupid people.
Anne used a few of these expressions on every show, every week for 12 (!) years.
It makes it ...,well,too many to mention. (No, ! doesn't mean factorial here)
I'll find a link later on.

tourist,
thank you for the explanation.
Why is 'imbecile' unsuitable, then? I thought was an offensive word for a stupid person.

a bimbo (if we refer to a girl; although this is both sexist and offensive)

Xander,
I think the fact there are a lot of people here really helps. Sometimes I'd look at the clue and think of nothing. But then I'd read 2-3 synonyms and my mind would suddenly switch on and pull back sth from its depths. And I suppose there are some contributors whose mental dictionary is just huge.

When it comes to something so incredibly useful as calling your fellow human being an idiot, the sky is the limit, really. I can think of a dozen more of these on the spot, and if I put a little bit of effort into this, it'll be another impressive handful. But ask me for some terms of endearment or praise, and I'll be reaching for that dictionary after about five or six.
I'm starting to suspect tourist really staged an experiment in human nature. For his own amusement, no doubt. :-)

It is, but remember when you referred me to IrinaS's post #35?Juliemiracle пишет: ↑04 июл 2019, 09:22 Why is 'imbecile' unsuitable, then? I thought it was an offensive word for a stupid person.
Imbecile, simpleton, bimbo are in the same category.
Hate splitting hairs, but of course
the requirement not to use noun phrases is not set in stone and can be made optional.
we've got our fair share of posters in Boots on this board. We don't have to stage anything ..Easy-Breezy English,
I'm starting to suspect @tourist really staged an experiment in human nature. For his own amusement, no doubt. :-)
Let's call it a Reality Show, ignoring the fact that there is nothing really "real" in any of those shows ... )
btw,one more jumped out of my passive vocabulary :
not the sharpest pencil in the drawer

IrinaS,
oh, that was out of the blue, really :)
But let's turn to the new topic.
Let it be words to describe the way we eat sth. All the synonyms to the word 'eat' you can come up with :)

tourist,
I remember the Russian version of that show with Maria Kiselyova from my childhood. She looked so strict, so austere to me and used very much the same clever nitpicking phrases like Anne Robinson, only in Russian. She made me feel slightly uneasy, and yet, she was sort of awe-inspiring.

I used to memorize her lines and recite them at high school. We had a teacher who treated students like shite, and we mixed Kiseleva's lines with that teacher's verbal vomit to make fun of her (the teacher).Juliemiracle пишет: ↑05 июл 2019, 22:26 I remember the Russian version of that show with Maria Kiselyova from my childhood.
