Unit 15. Порядок расположения determiners.

И, говоря о уточнителях/determiners, можно еще добавить, что их может быть более одного перед существительным и чтобы дать правила их расстановки вводят понятия predeterminers, central determiners и postdeterminers.
Берем схему тоже из 'Longman Student Grammar':

Изображение

К "основным", центральным относятся идентификаторы – артикли, указательные и личные уточнители.
Перед ними могут стоять, например, all, both и half.
А после них - например, many, few, числительные и некоторые другие слова, которые тоже относят к determiners.
Детальное знакомство с этим тоже можно отложить, тем более что на позиции подлежащего такие сочетания встречаются не так и часто. Например:

[The other youth] carried on with his own line.
[The first meeting] will take place… on Bald Mountain.
[Half a glass of vinegar], two onions, and a pinch of pepper.
After all, [half the matter in the universe] is moving in the opposite direction in time.
[All these comets], antimatter meteorites, auto-exploding nuclear ships, various cosmic clouds, and quantum generators — it’s all too banal, and consequently far from the truth.
[All the window ventilators] were open in the Department of Absolute Knowledge, because the stench from Vibegallo’s herring heads was seeping in.
Ten o’clock — [all the power] goes off.”
Naturally, [all these events] are of immense interest to me, both as a specialist and as an administrator….

Обратить внимание стоит на два момента:

a) если all относится не ко всем подобным предметам на свете, необходимо уточнить к каким именно – например, all the apples, all those apples, all my apples и т.п.
b) порядковые числительные требуют перед собой определенного артикля: the first, the second и т.п.

Unit 16. Определения

И внутри группы существительного могут быть определения (Modifiers).

а) В этой роли, во-первых, могут быть прилагательные (Adjectives).
Та же самая степень сравнения (The same degree) выражается с помощью конструкции as + adjective + as:
This watch is as cheep/expensive as that one.
И меньшая степень сравнения (A lower degree) выражается с помощью наречий less и least: expensive - less expensive - the least expensive.
К построению подлежащих это обычно отношения не имеет, поэтому лучше к этому вернуться позже – я это даю лишь, чтобы показать, что ничего сложного там нет.

b) И отличительная и важная особенность английского – это возможность для многих существительных играть роль определения без изменения их формы. Например: а chain smoker заядлый курильщик, business interests деловые интересы, an adventure story приключенческий роман, the end house последний дом, the armaments race гонка вооружений, an army doctor военный врач, a check material ткань в клетку, a duty visit визит вежливости, an evening paper вечерняя газета.

Причем грамматически они остаются существительными и разница в том, что на них падает более сильное ударение, чем на второе существительное (на прилагательное в сочетании с существительным – менее сильное, чем на существительное)
A dust storm –

Sent. = DM + Sent'.
(где Sent'. – основная часть предложения)

Правило 4. При базовом порядке слов предложение начинается с подлежащего и это почти всегда группа существительногоNP (noun phrase):

S → NP

Правило 5. Простейшая группа существительного стоится так:

NP → D + H

В роли D может быть: а) уточнитель (a cat, this cat, my cat) или b) существительное в притяжательном падеже (Jack's cat).

В роли H может быть: а) существительное (the house) или b) местоимение (you all).

Правило 6. Группа существительного может "усложняться" определением:

NP → D + М + H

В роли М может быть а) прилагательное (a red car) или b) существительное (a chain smoker).

A Glossary of English Grammar (G.Leech)
The Routledge Dictionary of English Language Studies (M.Pearce)
The Oxford Dictionary of English Grammar (B.Aarts, S.Chalker, E.Weiner)

1. noun phrase
a group of words (e.g. article + adjective + noun) which acts as the subject, object or complement in a clause. Example: the last bus. (Swan)
a group of words that acts as the subject, complement, or object of a clause, or as the object of a preposition. (Collins)
a noun or pronoun on its own, e.g. butter, Helen, you, or a group of words that can function as a subject, object or complement, e.g. a shop, my bag, a lot of spare time (Eastwood)

2. noun [naʊn]
a word like oil, memory, arm, which can be used with an article. Nouns are most often the names of people or things. Personal names (e.g. George) and place names (e.g. Birmingham) are called 'proper nouns'; they are usually used without articles. (Swan)
a word like desk, team, apple, information (Eastwood)
a word that refers to people, things, and abstract ideas such as feelings and qualities; e.g. woman, Harry, guilt.(Collins)

proper noun
a noun that refers to a particular person, place, or institution; e.g. Nigel, Edinburgh, Christmas. Compare with common noun. (Collins)
a noun (most often with no article) which is the name of a particular person, place, organisation etc. Examples: Andrew, Brazil; the European Union. (Swan)

common noun a noun used to refer to a person, thing, or substance; e.g. sailor, computer, glass. Compare with proper noun. (Collins)
A noun which refers to a class of entities (people, things and so on) or phenomena, for example girl, tiger, table,
mustard, pessimism
. Common nouns are distinct from proper nouns, which refer to an individual entity (for example, Delhi, Barbara, Microsoft) or to a unique set of entities (for example, the Rockies, the Bahamas). Unlike proper nouns, common nouns are normally written without an initial capital letter. Common nouns make up a very large category, including most count nouns and all non-count nouns. Other categories largely included in that of common nouns are: collective nouns, concrete nouns and abstract nouns. All common nouns can be preceded by the (the definite article). (Leech)

abstract noun
(the opposite of a concrete noun) the name of something which we experience as an idea, not by seeing, touching etc. Examples: doubt; height; geography. (Swan)
a noun used to describe a quality, idea, or experience rather than something physical or concrete; e.g. joy, size, language. Compare with concrete noun. (Collins)

concrete noun
(the opposite of an abstract noun) the name of something which we can experience by seeing, touching etc. Examples: cloud; petrol; raspberry. (Swan)
A concrete noun is a noun referring to something that we can see or touch, e.g. man, bottle, grass, shop. An abstract noun refers to an idea, quality or action, something we cannot see or touch, e.g. science, excitement, stupidity, routine.(Eastwood)
a noun that refers to something we can touch or see; e.g. table, dress, flower. Compare with abstract noun. (Collins)

countable noun
a noun like car, dog, idea, which can have a plural form, and can be used with the indefinite article a/an. See also uncountable noun. (Swan)
a noun that can be either singular or plural, e.g. bag(s), road(s), hour(s) (Eastwood)
a noun that can be singular or plural; e.g. dog/dogs, lemon/lemons, foot/feet. Also called count noun. (Collins)

uncountable noun
a noun which has no plural form and cannot normally be used with the article a/an. Examples: mud; rudeness; furniture. (Swan)
a noun that cannot have a/an in front of it and has no plural form, e.g. gold, petrol, music, An uncountable noun takes a singular verb. (Eastwood)
a noun that refers to a general kind of thing rather than to an individual item, and so has only one form; e.g. money, furniture, intelligence. Also called uncount noun. (Collins)

3. number
(1) The grammatical choice between singular (one) and plural (more than one). In English, nouns, pronouns, determiners and present tense verbs can vary for number, for example: student ~ students, I ~ we, that ~ those, takes ~ take.
(2) Another term for a numeral.
(Leech)

4. singular [ˈsɪŋɡjʊlə]
a grammatical form used to talk about one person, thing, etc, or about an uncountable quantity or mass. Examples: me; bus; water; is; much; this.(Swan)
A singular form refers to one thing only. Car is singular; cars is plural. (Eastwood)
singular the form used to refer to or talk about one person or thing; e.g. dog, woman. Compare with plural. (Collins)

5. plural [ˈplʊərəl]
grammatical form used to refer to more than one person or thing. Examples: we; buses; children; are; many; these. (Swan)
A plural form means more than one. Tree is singular; trees is plural. (Eastwood)
the form used to refer to more than one person or thing; e.g. dogs, women. (Collins)

6. case
The grammatical term case refers to systematic variation in the form of a noun or pronoun according to its role in the syntax of the sentence. Case (nominative, accusative, genitive, dative, and so on) is important in many modern and classical European languages but, historically, English has lost most of its case distinctions. The only relics of the English case system today are the nominative and accusative forms of pronouns (I ~ me; we ~ us) and the genitive forms of nouns and pronouns (boy’s, my, ours and so on), also called the possessive forms. Even these forms have lost some of their ‘case’ function in modern English.
(Leech)
An inflection of nouns (or noun phrases), including pronouns, the realization of which is conditioned by grammatical function. Unlike Latin, which has six cases, English distinguishes only between the overtly marked subjective, objective, and genitive cases.
(Aarts)

plain case
(also called common case): an unmarked case carried by non-pronominal nouns. For example, the nouns cats and milk in the sentence Cats like milk are in the plain case. (Aarts)

Genitive case
СпойлерПоказать
In inflected languages such as Russian, Latin, Irish and Old English, the genitive case is marked by a change in the form of a noun to signal a particular grammatical relationship between the noun and other parts of the sentence, as in Latin puella/puellae (a girl/of a girl). Often this relationship is one of possession. Modern English no longer has a fully fledged genitive case. Instead, genitive relationships are shown by adding -’s to a noun or noun phrase, such as John’s suitcase. Syntactically, English genitives usually function as determiners in the noun phrase, specifying the reference of the head noun (as in the previous example). In such cases, they can be replaced by a possessive determiner (compare Rushdie’s novel with His novel). Genitives can also modify the head of a noun phrase: The novelist’s house. Some genitives can stand alone as noun phrases. In these cases, ellipsis is usually involved, as these examples illustrate (ellipted items are in [ ]):
A. Whose turn is it? B. It’s Michael’s [turn]; The parents’ interests had to be considered as well as the children’s [interests].
Although genitives do frequently consist of a single word, syntactically they are a phrase level phenomenon. This can be seen in such constructions as The University of Southern California’s law school. Semantically, genitives can be possessive, subjective, objective, part/whole genitives, or genitives of time/measure.
1) Possessive genitives can be paraphrased with the verbs have or own: The kid’s money (The kid has/owns money).
2) Subject genitives are so-called because the relationship between the genitive word and the noun it modifies resembles the relationship of a subject to its predicate: The team’s success (The team succeeded).
3) Object genitives are so-called because the relationship between the genitive word and the noun it modifies resembles the relationship between a direct object and its verb: Ghandi’s assassination (Someone assassinated Ghandi).
4) Part/whole genitives: The plane’s wings.
5) Genitives of measurement: A day’s work; The man’s weight.
Often, the noun phrase -’s option can be used interchangeably with an of-phrase structure, sometimes called the periphrastic genitive (compare The team’s success and The success of the team). But in many cases, one option is sometimes preferred over the other (compare A day’s work with ? A work of a day). Several factors influence this choice. For example, -’s is favoured by human beings, particularly when they are referred to with a proper noun (compare John’s suitcase with ? The suitcase of John). Abstract nouns, on the other hand, are more likely to be used with the of-phrase construction, as in the collapse of communism. Also, part/whole relationships and measurements generally prefer the of-phrase construction, particularly when the noun being modified is inanimate: The roof of the building would generally be preferred over The building’s roof, as would The length of the list over The list’s length.
(Routledge)

genitive
(n. and adj.) (Designating) the case inflection typically carried by nouns (noun phrases), including pronouns, when they express possession, close association, or a range of other meanings. (Also called the Saxon genitive.)
The genitive is marked by the addition of -’s to regular singular nouns and to plurals that lack s (e.g. the boy’s mother, the children’s mother). An apostrophe (’) only, which has no spoken realization, is added to regular plurals (e.g. the boys’ mother).
Some grammarians argue that, although it is a relic of the earlier English case system, the genitive should no longer be described in terms of case in modern English. On this view, the English genitive is not comparable to the inflected genitive case of Latin, but is a type of enclitic, as evidenced by the fact that the -’s ending can be added to a noun phrase, e.g.
[the Prince of Wales]’s speech
[the people in the flat below]’s radio
[someone else]’s problem
This phenomenon is sometimes called the group genitive or group possessive. ‘Possession’ is the most central meaning expressed by the genitive form, and for this reason the distinct genitive forms of the personal pronouns are called possessive pronouns. However, other meanings are also possible, for example ‘descriptive’ meaning (e.g. a women’s college, London’s West End), ‘measure’ meaning (e.g. a day’s work), and ‘partitive’ meaning (e.g. the car’s windscreen; i.e. the windscreen is part of the car). The genitive seen in See you at David’s or I got it at the chemist’s is sometimes called the local genitive. Meaning, rather than surface syntax, distinguishes the subjective genitive and objective genitive. Thus the genitive has subjective meaning in the architect’s design of the tower (compare The architect designed the tower), whereas it has objective meaning in the enemy’s defeat by the army (compare The army defeated the enemy). When a possessive or similar relationship can be expressed by a postmodifying of-phrase (e.g. the mother of the boys), the term of-genitive is often used.
(Aarts)

The form of a noun or noun phrase ending in ’s (apostrophe s) or s’ (s apostrophe) and indicating possession or some such meaning. (Apart from a few special cases, the s’ spelling is restricted to the genitive ending of regular plural nouns, such as boys ~ boys’.) The genitive form of a noun typically comes before another noun, the head of the noun phrase of which the genitive is part, for example Robert’s desk. Historically, the genitive is the only remnant in modern English of the case system of nouns, prevalent in Old English, and also in classical Greek, Latin and many modern European languages. The of-phrase (sometimes called the ‘of-genitive’) has replaced the genitive in many usages; in others, both constructions can be used, for example the arrival of the bride = the bride’s arrival. In modern English, the genitive is strictly speaking no longer a case-ending at all: rather, it is an ending added to noun phrases, such as [the bride’s] in [the bride’s] arrival above, or [my father’s] in [my father’s] favourite breakfast. Note that my belongs with father’s in this example rather than with breakfast. Usually the genitive fills a determiner slot in the larger noun phrase of which it is part: hence the function of the bride’s above is similar to that of her in her arrival or the in the arrival.
Potentially, the genitive may be quite a complicated phrase. But there is a tendency to prefer the of-construction where the genitive would cause too much complexity in front of the head noun.
Hence the night train to Edinburgh’s departure is less likely to occur than the departure of the night train to Edinburgh. Notice in this example, however, that the placing of the ’s at the end of Edinburgh is perfectly acceptable, even though the genitive indicates the departure of the train, rather than the departure of Edinburgh! This is an example of the so-called group genitive, where the genitive phrase contains postmodification. Other examples are: [the mayor of Chicago’s] re-election campaign, [someone else’s] fault. However, although such examples are possible, the most common type of genitive consists of just one noun: particularly a proper noun, and more particularly the name of a person: [Napoleon’s] horse, [Marion’s] husband, and so on. Sometimes the noun following the genitive is omitted: This scarf must be your sister’s . The genitive forms of personal pronouns (for example, my, your, his) are known as possessive pronouns or determiners.

7. determiner
one of a group of words that begin noun phrases. Determiners include a/an, the, my, this, each, either, several, more, both, all. (Swan)
a word that can come before a noun to form a noun phrase, e.g. a, the, this, my (Eastwood)
one of a group of words including the, a, some, and my which are used at the beginning of a noun phrase. (Collins)

possessive [pəˈzɛsɪv] determiner
a determiner such as my, your, and their. Also called possessive adjective. (Collins)

demonstrative [dɪˈmɒnstrətɪv] determiner
one of the words this, that, these, and those used in front of a noun; e.g. … this woman… that tree. They are also used as pronouns; e.g. That looks nice… This is fun. (Collins)
This, that, these and those are demonstrative determiners or pronouns. (Eastwood)
The four words this, that, these and those are called demonstratives. When they are followed by some other word (especially a noun) in a noun phrase, they are demonstrative determiners: this machine; that old bicycle; these people; those bizarre incongruities that life occasionally throws up. When they act as the head (and typically the only word) of a noun phrase, they are demonstrative pronouns: This is a fascinating programme. Whose gloves are those? The demonstratives are so called because they have the function of ‘showing’ or ‘pointing to’ something in the context. (Leech)

8. article
A, an and the are called 'articles'. A/an is called the 'indefinite article'; the is called the' definite article'. (Swan)

9. identifier
A general semantic term that is sometimes used to refer to a particular class of determinative or pronoun whose function is to single out an entity or individual; contrasted with quantifier. Definite identifiers include the, the demonstratives (this, that, etc.), possessives (e.g. my, your), and some pronouns (e.g. it, he, she, they). Indefinite identifiers include a, an, and one. (Aarts)

10. quantifier
a determiner like many, few, little, several, which is used in a noun phrase to show how much or how many we are talking about. (Swan)
a word saying how many or how much, e.g. all, some, half, a lot of, enough (Eastwood)

11. pronoun
a word like it, yourself, their, which is used instead of a more precise noun or noun phrase (like the cat, Peter's self, the family's). The word pronoun can also be used for a determiner when this includes the meaning of a following noun which has been left out. Example: I'll take these. (Swan)
A pronoun is a word that functions like a noun phrase, e.g. you, he, ourselves, someone. (Eastwood)
a word used instead of a noun, when you do not want to name someone or something directly; e.g. it, you, none. (Collins)

12. numerals (also called numbers)
Words referring to number. The two main classes of numerals are cardinal numerals (one, two, three, four . . .) and ordinal numerals (first, second, third, fourth . . .). They may be written not only in letters, but in digits: 1, 2, 3, 4, . . . 15, . . . 66, . . . 1,000, . . . or 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, . . . 15th, . . . 66th, . . . and so on. Numerals have a small grammar of their own within the larger grammar of the English language. For example, speakers of English know how to read aloud the numeral 11,362 (eleven thousand three hundred and sixty-two) even though they have probably not met with that particular number before. As for their grammatical function in sentence grammar, numerals behave rather like determiners and pronouns. Like determiners, they can precede the modifiers and head of a noun phrase: three blind mice, our twenty-ninth wedding anniversary. (However, they follow most determiners when co-occurring with them in the same noun phrase: the Ten Commandments, her fourth child.) Like pronouns, they can also occupy the position of head of a noun phrase:
Those delicious cakes! I have already eaten three.
Really? This is only my second.
In addition, ordinal numbers can be used like adverbs, for example: First, let me introduce my family. In the final race, Jason came sixth. (Leech)

ordinal number
a number that is used to indicate where something comes in an order or sequence; e.g. first, fifth, tenth, hundredth. (Collins)
cardinal number
a number used for counting; e.g. one, seven, nineteen. (Collins)

13. adjective
a word like green, hungry, impossible, which is used when we describe people, things, events etc. Adjectives are used in connection with nouns and pronouns. Examples: a green apple; She's hungry. (Swan)
a word like big, new, special, famous (Eastwood)
a word used to tell you more about a thing, such as its appearance, colour, size, or other qualities; e.g. …a pretty blue dress. (Collins)

14. comparative
the form of an adjective or adverb made with -er (e.g. older, faster); also the structure more + adjective/adverb, used in the same way (e.g. more useful, more politely). (Swan)
an adjective or adverb with -er on the end or more in front of it; e.g. friendlier, more important, more carefully. (Collins)
Comparative forms are older, morefamous, more efficiently etc. (Eastwood)

15. Superlative
the form of an adjective or adverb made with the suffix -est (e.g. oldest, fastest); also the structure most + adjective/adverb, used in the same way (e.g. most intelligent, most politely). (Swan)
an adjective or adverb with -est on the end or most in front of it; e.g. thinnest, quickest, most wisely. (Collins)
Superlative forms are oldest, mostfamous, most sharply etc. (Eastwood)

Почти все термины до этого ничего нового по сравнению с принятой у нас системой подачи английской грамматики не дают (а что касается понятия determiner, этот термин есть даже у Мерфи).
А вот функции "внутри" группы существительного – достаточно непривычны. Причем термина determinative в популярных изданиях стараются избегать (опасаясь "перегрузить" читателя) и чаще всего группу существительного записывают.

determiner + modifier + head
или
determiner + modifier + noun

Но, строго говоря, при этом смешиваются формы и функции, да и вообще неправильно – в этой роли может быть и genitive, а не только determiner.

16. head
The main word in a phrase. The head of a noun phrase is (normally) a noun or a pronoun. The head of an adjective phrase is an adjective. The head of an adverb phrase is an adverb. The head of a phrase is an obligatory element, and other words, phrases or clauses are optionally added to it to qualify its meaning. These optional elements are called modifiers. For example, in (friendly) places (to stay), (extremely) tall and (more) often (than I expected) , the parts in parentheses are modifiers, and those in bold are the heads of their phrases. (Leech)
The compulsory element in a phrase. For example, in the noun phrase a very clear recollection, the head is recollection, because when it is removed we are left with an ungrammatical utterance: a very clear . But if the modifier very is removed, the utterance remains grammatical: a clear recollection. (Routledge)

17. determinative
A function label used for a word or phrase performing the function of determination, typically inside noun phrases. (Aarts)

18. modifier
a word or group of words that come in front of a noun; e.g. …a beautiful sunny day… …a psychology conference. (Collins)
modifier/modify In the phrase a narrow street, the adjective narrow is a modifier. It modifies the noun street. It changes our idea of the street by giving more information about it. Other kinds of words can modify: I've got a tennis ball. We stopped suddenly. (Eastwood)
modify An adjective is said to 'modify' the noun it is with: it adds to or defines its meaning. Examples: a fine day; my new job. An adverb can modify a verb (e.g. run fast), an adjective (e.g. completely ready) or other words or expressions. In sports car, the first noun modifies the second. (Swan)

Unit 17. Глагол как функция.

Итак, при базовом порядке слов предложение начинается с Subject (это почти всегда группа существительного - NP).
И сразу за ним следует Verb. Так исторически сложилось в грамматике, что так называется и часть речи (в этом случае так называют одно слово) и элемент предложения (который может быть и составной глагольной формой).
Aarts предлагает писать названия функций с заглавной буквы, чтобы было легче различать – думаю, это неплохая идея.

Правило 7. При базовом порядке элементов за Подлежащим следует Глагол:

Sent. → S + V …

В некоторых случаях этих двух элементов достаточно, хотя такие предложения бывают не часто, – например:
I (S) agree (V).
No cure (S) exists (V).
They (S) are lying (V).
The protestors (S) were demonstrating (V).

Глагол как элемент предложения всегда представляет собой глагольную форму. Начнем с того, сколько и какие формы может иметь глагол как часть речи. Возьмем два предложения:

She wrote a story for the school magazine. He's written an excellent book.

Здесь две формы глагола write – прошедшего времени и причастие (тоже прошедшего времени).

Теперь еще два:

We finished this work. I've almost finished my novel.

Как можно видеть, в некоторых случаях они могут и совпадать, а у глагола be возможных форм несколько больше (be, am, is, are, was, were, being, been).

Unit 18. Классификация глаголов.

Классификация глаголов следующая:

Смысловые (Lexical) – play, make, sing, cost, run и т.д. и т.п.
Вспомогательные (Auxiliary) – do, be, have (они также очень широко употребляются и как смысловые)
Модальные (Modal) – will, shall, can, may, must, ought (to)

Модальные глаголы чаще всего относят тоже к вспомогательным (Modal auxiliaries), а глаголы will и shall в старых грамматиках относили как к модальным, так и чисто вспомогательным (что, на мой взгляд, совершенно правильно, так как в "классическом" английском именно так и было).

Смысловые глаголы в свою очередь делятся на переходные (transitive), непереходные (intransitive) и глаголы-связки (linking verbs) . От этого зависит, какой элемент предложения будет идти за Глаголом.

И еще один важный момент. Вообще, на мой взгляд, из детальных пособий времена лучше всего даны в 'A Comprehensive Grammar of the English Language' (сложность этой книги тоже часто сильно преувеличивают).

VP → (Auxiliary/Auxiliaries) + Main verb

Первый глагол в "цепочке" всегда личный, остальные – в неличной форме (инфинитив или причастия).
В некоторых пособиях вводят разделение между формами и функциями (например, lexical verb – обозначение формы, а main verb – функции), но это, в общем-то, излишне, так как здесь все глаголы "играют сами себя".

Итак, после Подлежащего идет Глагол:

[The car] bounced and pitched.
[Hawk-nose] banged his nose on the gun barrel.
“[We] can park the car over by the police,” said Hawk-nose.
[We] entered the town.
[The landlady] must have been well on the other side of a hundred.
[The crone] raised her eyes to the ceiling.
[The perverse crone] had made my bed on the floor.
[The sound of my own voice] awakened me completely.
[Cold night air] drew from the window.
[The diapason of his knowledge] was truly grandiose.
[The young Kovalev] returned to his post.
[You] can rest on the couch.
[The commission] was composing a report, and [the Institute] was fearfully waiting the coming developments.
[Vibegallo’s neighbors on the same floor] were taking leaves of absence at their own expense.
[Briareus] was rocking to and fro.
[He] was sitting on his haunches with his hand, supported by seven others, stuck out into the passage.

И задача, разумеется, разобраться, как эти формы используются.

Unit 19. Физическое и грамматическое время.

Необходимо четко различать понятия физического времени (Time) и грамматического времени (Tense).

Однако твердой зависимости нет и, например, в 'I wish I could help you' could – форма прошедшего времени, но пожелание относится к настоящему.

I write a letter.
a) Для описания "собственно" настоящего это не годится, потому что за короткий момент настоящего написать письмо невозможно.
b) При описании "расширенного" настоящего фраза звучит неестественно, так как получается, то я регулярно занимаюсь написанием одного и того же письма. Поэтому таких предложений советуют избегать и естественно оно будет звучать уже в виде, например: I write a letter to my brother every day..

Поэтому чаще всего Simple употребляется только для действий в "расширенном" настоящем, а для выражения коротких действий в специальных случаях – например, речи комментаторов: Ronaldu passes the ball to Kokorin. Kokorin shoots!. Передача иди удар происходят полностью в короткий момент времени почти одновременно с описанием такого действия. Соответственно в речи комментатора:
The referee blows his whistle – речь о коротком свистке, который фактически укладывается по времени в его описание комментатором.
The referee is blowing his whistle – достаточно длинный свисток, в процессе этого действия.

Unit 20. Возможные расхождения между физическим и грамматическим временем.

Грамматические времена могут употребляться не только для описания того физического времени, которому формально соответствуют.

Правило 10. Для запоминания нужно разделить случаи, когда грамматическое время употребляется "по назначению" (т.е. настоящее для настоящего и т.п.), и когда оно описывает события в другом физическом времени.

Начнем с Present Simple.

А. Физическое настоящее.

a) Present Simple свободно употребляется для описания состояний и серийных действий в "расширенном" настоящем:

● She walks to school every day (повторяющееся действие).
● Water freezes at 0 degrees centigrade (это происходит всегда).
● I know Mr. Smith. The car belongs to Jack. I live in the country (состояния).

b) Чтобы употребить это грамматическое время для описания отдельного действия в настоящий момент времени, оно должно "укладываться" в него фактически полностью. Это бывает достаточно редко:

● Sharapova serves (в речи спортивных комментаторов).
● Now I add three eggs to the mixture (при демонстрациях – например, кулинарных рецептов).
● I declare the meeting open (с глаголами декларации – тут полное совпадение, так как действие и есть то, что я говорю).

Также Present Simple употребляется в в специальных восклицательных предложениях, начинающихся с наречий (часто here и there), и с глаголами восприятия:

● Here he comes! There she goes! Off they go! (в начале гонки)
● It smells sweet. I see a flat stretch of ground. I hear approaching feet. (такие глаголы редко употребляются с продолженных временах)

В. Физическое прошлое и будущее.

Прошлое:
● That night Romeo sees Juliet alone on her balcony ("историческое настоящее" – как и в русском).
● So I go into the office, and I see this man, and he says to me... (в рассказах и анекдотах – тоже как в русском)
● EARTHQUAKE ROCKS NICARAGUA (в газетных заголовках).
● The author of this book says that... The newspaper says that it's going to be cold today (при ссылках на книги, журналы, письма, фильмы и т.п. – сказанное существовало в прошлом, существует сейчас и будет существовать в будущем)
●Tamsin’s a good cook, I hear. Grace says you told her to come over here. I gather Peter's looking for a job. Jane tells me you're thinking of emigrating. (при передаче чужой речи в выражениях типа ‘I hear’, ‘I see’, ‘I gather’, ‘they say’: сказать и ‘I heard’, ‘I have heard’ и т.п.).

Будущее:
● Jack will telephone you as soon as he returns (в придаточных предложениях времени).
If Cindy passes the bar exam, she’ll be able to practice law (в условных предложениях).
● I have a meeting next Wednesday at that time. The plane leaves for London at nine o'clock tonight. (будущие запланированные действиях)
● Where do I pay? Well, what do we do now? (для получения или дачи инструкций касательно будущего – встречается достаточно часто)

● Why don't you take a day off tomorrow? (в предложениях вида Why don't you...?)

Разумеется, чтобы ко всему этому привыкнуть, нужно время и полезно держать под рукой такого плана таблицы, чтобы время от времени вспоминать возможные варианты. Но в любом случае грамматическое время Simple обозначает действия, которые воспринимаются говорящим полностью – в отличие от действий в процессе их совершения, которые необходимо выражать временами группы Progressive.

Unit 21. Simple в прошедшем и будущем.

Теперь употребление времен группы Simple в прошедшем и будущем.

А. Past simple свободно употребляется для полностью завершившихся событий в прошлом – так можно описывать и "одиночные" действия, и серийные и состояния:

● I attended a meeting of that committee last week. I telephoned Jack an hour ago ("одиночное" действие).
● It snowed almost every weekend last winter (повторявшееся действие).
● Professor Nelson taught at Yale for 30 years (длительное действие в прошлом).
● He owed me a lot of money (состояние)

В. И при выражении сослагательности это грамматическое время может относиться к физическому настощему:

● If you parked your car there, we could keep an eye on it. I wish you were here. It's time we all took a rest.

Кроме того, как и в русском языке, употребление формы прошедшего времени звучит вежливее:
Did you want to sit down and stay a while?

Надо помнить, что Past Simple не выражает совершенности/несовершенности действия, а только говорит о том, что это действие было в прошлом, в прошлом же и закончилось и с настоящим напрямую никак не связано. Обычно на русский язык его по смыслу переводят глаголами совершенного времени, но это иногда зависит и от контекста:
He stood on a rise он стоял на возвышении.
His hair stood on end волосы у него встали дыбом.

С помощью Future Simple описываются предполагаемые события в будущем:

● Jane will take the bar exam next month ("одиночное" ожидаемое событие).
● After October, Jack will take the 7:30 train to Chicago every day (серийные предполагаемые действия).
● Mary will live in Madrid until she improves her Spanish (состояние).

И, кроме того, нужно учитывать, что глагол will может выражать и различные модальные оттенки:

● Oh, I’ve left the door open. I’ll go and shut it (решение принимается в момент речи).
● I 'will stop smoking! I really will! (решимость в более «глобальном» масштабе)
● I will/ I'll lend you the book if you need it (готовность, добровольность, согласие).
● I'll definitely pay you back next week. I'll kill her for this (обещание, угрозa)
● You will wait here till I return (приказ).
● Danny will sit and look at the sea for hours (привычные действия; так же могут выражаться всегда справедливые истины: Sulphuric acid will dissolve most metals).
● He 'will leave that door open (упорная привычка – часто при этом выражается неодобрение).
● They won't (=they refuse to) accept your offer. The car won't start. (упорное нежелание что-то делать; может относиться и к неодушевленным предметам)

Но в самой простой форме употребление времен группы Simple можно увидеть в таблице Азар (о be going to нужен особый разговор):

Unit 22. Продолженное время.

И при первом важнейшем выборе при построении глагольной формы между действием полностью и действием в процессе второй альтернативой является соответственно времена группы Progressive. И соответственно при его употреблении всегда главная особенность – процесс некоторого изменения, незаконченность. Также я начну с Present Progressive.

А. Настоящее время. Прогрессив может употребляться как для действий совершающихся в данный момент времени, так и в "расширенном" настоящем, когда речь идет также о некотором действии в развитии:

● He is attending a meeting now (он сейчас там).
● I'm studying geology at the University of Colorado (изучаю в настоящее время).
● She's becoming more and more like her mother.
● Jane is living with her parents (выражается временность – в случае постоянного проживания будет Jane lives…)
● Jack is getting up at five o'clock every day this week to prepare for his examination (это только на этой неделе).
● Bill is kicking the ball around the backyard (серийные действия, воспринимаемые как единый процесс).
● The Rhine is always pouring its waters into the sea (подчеркивается самое действие – река несет и несет свои воды).

Со словами типа always выражается постоянное действие, но с упором на то, что оно повторяется и повторяется (часто, но не всегда при этом выражается неодобрение):

● Tom is always working late at the office.

"Статические" глаголы (о них подробно – чуть позже) обычно не употребляются во времена группы прогрессив по самой сути – они обозначают неизменные состояния.
Хьюингз, например, приводит примеры употребления таких глаголов и в прогрессив (но это нравится далеко не всем):

● Jean's with us at the moment. The children are loving having her here.

В. Прошлое и будущее.

Прогрессив может использоваться в "историческом настоящем":
● While Tom is standing up on the coach looking back at his father, the horses suddenly break into a gallop.

И весьма часто так обозначаются запланированные действия в будущем:
● She's coming tomorrow.

Unit 23. Перенос продолженного времени.

Прогрессив легко "переносится" в прошедшее время и в будущее.

Past Progressive.

A. Речь, соответственно, о прошлом:

● He was walking to school at 8:30 this morning (действие в процессе в какой-то момент времени в прошлом).
● John was coughing all night long (действие в процессе в достаточно длительный период времени).
● Jane was washing her hair when the phone rang (в момент совершения другого действия).
● While Alex was travelling in Europe, he ran into an old friend (то же самое, но действие более длительное).

B. Скорее о настоящем:

● I was hoping you could lend me $10 (как и в случае с Past Simple такие фразы несколько вежливее)

Future Progressive.

● He will be taking a test at 8 a.m. tomorrow (действие в процессе в какой-то момент в будущем).
● Jane will be working on her thesis for the next three years (длительное продолженное действие).

И кратко, самую суть времен группы Progressive – таблица Азар:

Изображение

В литературе Past Progressive употребляется весьма часто, а Future Progressive реже, но тоже встречается:

I was approaching my destination.
[The second man, with a reddish beard and without a moustache,] peering over his shoulder, was also smiling.
[The bearded one] was looking through the rear door in a quandary of indecision and said, “Eh, could you maybe move it a little?”
[Everything] was going along normally.
“No, really, I was just kidding,” said The Beard.
[Hawk-nose] was closing the gates with groanings and squealings for accompaniment while I, feeling a bit out of place, was looking about, not quite knowing what to do with myself.
The somber light fell through the window; [the cat] was thrashing about noisily in the oak.

[Two voices] were talking in a barely audible whisper.
Somewhere [dogs] were barking despondently; behind the wall the old woman snored menacingly.
Now I understood where [they] were talking.
However that might be, [certain ideas] were beginning to circulate in my head, and my imagination was definitely aroused.
[A gang of kids] were loitering at the cross street, apparently playing tip-cat.
[Passersby] were looking at me with compassion.
In the parks, [small children] were running about, [old women] were knitting warm things, and [old men] were playing dominoes as if for keeps.

“You’ll be telling us everything that is going on in the future. Ha, ha, ha…
I’ll do just as you tell me…. But [you] ’ll be steering yourself. It’s all very simple.”
“I’ll be leaving tomorrow,” I said.
“I fear me, old fellow, that [you] ’ll be smacking through your teeth,” she said.
“And I’ll be asking you for the coin, too,” said the policeman, accepting the passport.
Photon will be happy, talkative, and [we] ’ll be spoiling it, feeding it sugar and pepper seeds, while [Janus-U] will be coming around to inquire whether he is interfering with our work.
“Save your skill for later. [You] ’ll be needing it.”
“[We] ’ll be using linear charges for the first time,” explained the General.
“Well, Mac,” said Vepr, “we’ve checked you out as thoroughly as possible under the circumstances. The General vouches for you. From now on [you] ’ll be taking orders from me.”

И еще раз табличку из Азар с двумя временами – простым и продолженным:

Unit 24. Совершенное время.

Теперь остаются еще два грамматических времени.

Правило 11. Когда говорится о событии в прошлом, после выбора между описанием действия в целом и действием в процессе совершения, необходимо выбрать, есть ли с точки зрения говорящего связь с настоящим моментов времени или ее нет.

Если говорящий считает, что такой связи нет, употребляются Past Simple/Past Progressive.

I [wrote] a letter (в прошлом - можно добавить, что это было десять лет назад или три минуты тому назад)
I [was writing] a letter when she came (тоже нет никакой связи с настоящим).

А вот если говорящий, считает, что некая связь с настоящим есть (объективная или он хочет сделать на этом акцент), то необходимо употреблять Present Perfect Simple/ Present Perfect Progressive:

I [have written] a letter (я вижу связь с настоящим моментом – например, что письмо готово и его можно отправлять).
I [have been writing] a letter for two hours

● I have already seen that movie (действие, которое было в прошлом, но имеющее значение в настоящем – я больше не хочу смотреть этот фильм, т.к. его уже видел).
● Jack has just finished his homework (только что закончившееся действие).
● The journal has been published very month since 1950 (здесь пассивный залог, но суть понятна – серийное действие в прошлом, продолжающееся до настоящего момента времени).
● I've known her for years . I have been a teacher since 1998 (ситуации, начавшиеся в прошлом и длящиеся до настоящего момента).
● The value of the Johnson's house has doubled in the last four years (длительное действие, завершившееся к данному моменту времени).

[В американском английском с just (и с похожими словами, когда в британском диалекте употребляется только настоящее совершенное) часто употребляется простое прошедшее: I just came back. You told me already. и т.п.]

B. И это время может относиться к будущему в придаточных предложениях:

● I will return your book on Monday when/if I've read it.

Примеры из литературы:

“Naina Kievna,” I said earnestly, “[you] have saved me from starving to death.”
[You] have seen drunks on occasion, and still remember the righteous indignation that welled up in you..
It stood on a shelf above a large water cask — a quite modern white plastic phone, such as I have seen in the movies and the director’s office.
I ordered glasses for air, but I have lost them and can’t find them.
“And the statement — let’s have that statement now! Stating thus and so: [/i]have received[/i] such and such, from such and such; which [person] has turned over the above-mentioned to the undersigned.
“Because [Janus-U] has taken a plane to Moscow. And, it’s important among other things, in relation to this sofa.
“[Nothing terrible] has happened. We just had some bad luck.”
“And what will happen when [he] has consumed it all?”
“[Mine], too, has disappeared!”
“As for us, [Roman] has made room in his lab.”
Victor snapped the catch and opened the dictaphone. “[The tape] has run out,” he said. “Too bad.”

He had already left before I could offer him a ride. She had worked at the post office before 1982. (действие закончившееся до какого-то другого в прошлом)

Unit 26. Перенос совершенного времени.

И время Perfect можно переносить в прошедшее и будущее.

Past Perfect Simple.
Это грамматическое время описывает "предпрошлое", т.е. событие, которое видится из определенного момента тоже в прошлом (после этого). Это могут быть и одиночные действия, и серийные и состояния:

● The goalkeeper had injured his leg, and couldn’t play (вратарь получил травму до определенного момента матча и потом уже не смог играть).
● Mr. Phipps had sung in that choir for fifty years (привычное действие
до момента в прошлом).
● The house had been empty for several months (длительное состояние к моменту, когда дом купили).

Здесь есть важный момент. Past Perfect Simple является "переносом" в прошлое и Present Perfect Simple и Past Simple. Это можно увидеть на таком примере. Возьмем два предложения:

They tell me that the parcel arrived on April 15th.
They tell me that the parcel has already arrived.

При преобразовании в прошедшее получается:

They told me that the parcel had arrived on April 15th.
They told me that the parcel had already arrived.

Т.е. грамматическая форма получается одинаковая. И, таким образом, Past Perfect используется не только для выражения события, которое связано с последующим моментом в прошлом же, а просто для обозначения какое событие было раньше (и так это время используется чаще):

I opened my eyes again. The snake disappeared.
I opened my eyes again. The snake had disappeared.
(В первом случае змея уползла после того, как я открыл глаза, а в втором к этому моменту змея уже исчезла).

Если очередность ясна из использования предлога, то можно употреблять и простое прошедшее:

After the teacher had left the room, the children started talking.
After the teacher left the room, the children started talking.

Также это грамматическое время употребляется в условных предложениях (что лучше рассмотреть отдельно).

● If Sally had studied harder, she would have passed the exam.

Future Perfect Simple.
Это фактически "перенос" той же идеи в будущее.

● I will have finished all this word processing by 5 p.m.

Примеры из литературы:

[Something about the house] had changed.
[The sun] had already risen quite high.
[The perverse crone] had made my bed on the floor.
[The sun] had finally set and [the white night] had arrived.
But [Roman] had already assessed the situation. He grabbed a greasy cap off the hanger and clapped it down on my ears.
As for you” — you could tell by his face that [he] had forgotten Korneev’s patronymic — “refrain for the time being… eh from visiting the museum.”
The book, too, lay on the windowsill just as I had left it.
I began to ponder why I had never tried a lobster before, or, say, oysters.
Maybe there was something left in the car? No — I had already cleaned out everything there was.
It was obvious from the expression on his face that [he] had forgotten my name.
Perhaps I should visit the cinema, I thought. But I had already seen Kozara, once in the theater and once on television.
I only thought that, one way or the other, [the crone] had achieved her purpose: the sofa was in one corner and I was lying in the other.
No one answered — apparently [the girls] had already left. It was fourteen hours and thirty minutes.
Remembering that I had driven the car for fourteen hours that day, I decided that perhaps there was no point in all this rush ….
The one [who] had raised his hand stuck his swarthy, hawk-nosed face through the window and asked, grinning, “Could you give us a lift to Solovetz?”
Settling in and propping himself comfortably on the gate was a gray-and-white tomcat of gigantic proportions such as I had never seen before.
In the dim light I saw the pillow on the floor and the trash [that] had fallen from the wardrobe.
But my hand was already holding a fork with a horn handle, [which] had appeared from somewhere, and I began to eat while the old woman stood by and nodded and repeated, “Eat, my friend, eat to your health. .”
Shivering, I got up to return to the sofa, and it dawned on me that I had locked the door before retiring.
I was lying crosswise on the sofa, [the blanket] had slid to the floor, and the early sun was shining into the window through the oak leaves.
I had read of such incidents before and remembered how the behavior of people finding themselves in analogous situations seemed to me extraordinarily and irritatingly inept.

И если Past Perfect употребляется чрезвычайно часто, Future Perfect, наоборот, можно встретить очень редко (а в некоторых книгах и ни разу). Это не потому, что в этом времени есть что-то необычное – просто ситуации, которые так надо описать, бывают нечасто.
“Done for!” grumbled the quartermaster. “After six months on the southern border, you’ll really be done for. [You]’ll have had it, boy. Then we’ll see who hotfoots it out like crazy.”
Then, come back for Rada and you’ll both be very happy. Maybe by then [we]’ll have finished off the Khontis.
In ten or fifteen years, [they] will have driven us into the desert altogether, and there we shall perish from the lack of food or water.
And the symptoms will be especially severe because [the legionnaires] will have given them a super-radiation dose during the breakthrough into enemy territory.

И в самом простом виде суть времен группы Perfect – в таблице Азар:

Unit 27. Совершенное продолженное время.

И, наконец, времена группы Perfect Progressive.

Present Perfect Progressive.

"Назначение" времени подчеркнуть процесс совершения действия в период до момента речи (часто прямо указывается длительность или с какого момента началось в прошлом действие).

Так как смысловой упор на процессе, то в отношении результата действия могут быть разные варианты:

It has been raining, but it has stopped now (действие только что закончилось).
I've been working for six hours and now I'll stop (действие еще продолжается в данный момент и сразу же закончится).
We've been learning this language for ten years (and are still learning it) (будет продолжаться дальше).

И можно отметить следующие случаи употребления:

● Jack has been going out with Jane (ситуация, начавшаяся в прошлом и которая, возможно, продлится в будущем).
● I have been reading that book (действие в процессе, которое еще не завершилось).
● The students have been getting better and better (изменяющееся состояние).
● You've been drinking again! (вывод о происходившем действии из некоего наблюдения в настоящем)

Примеры из литературы:

“Unfortunately,” said Roman. “I, too, have been constantly thinking about how we can tie in the parrots with Janus, and I can’t come up with anything.”
Of course, we will be ogling them and slapping our sides, but [we] have been waiting for them a long time, and we are prepared for their appearance.
“Now you got it wet, Korneev; [you] ’ve been lugging it about in the rain. Consider now: the springs rusted through, the upholstery rotting.”
Since then, [he] has been improving them over and over.
“By the way,” said Roman loudly, “it’s now been two minutes since I’ve been trying to pacify him and entirely without effect.”
“And I, Roman Petrovich, have been looking at you for a long time and no way can I understand how you can apply such terminology to the ideal man. Behold! the ideal man is dangerous to him!”
“We do need them,” said Stellotchka with a sigh. “I’ve been making layouts this way and that, and there’s lways some empty space.”

(Повторюсь, что даю примеры из литературы как ориентир, конечную цель, к которой надо будет стремиться. Разумеется, на ранних этапах надо брать что-то попроще).

Unit 28. Перенос совершенного продолженного времени

И, наконец, перенос Perfect Progressive.

Past Perfect Progressive.
Длительное действие в процессе до какого-то момента времени:

● She had been trying to finish her degree that year (смысловой упор на активности в процессе во время предшествовавшее настоящему).
● Jane had been working hard, so her doctor told her to take a vacation (процесс до какого-то момента времени).
● We had been planning to vacation in Maine, but changed our minds after, receiving the brochure on Nova Scotia (длительное действие в процессе, прерванное определенным событием).
● I had been wanting to see that play, so I was pleased when I won the tickets (длительное состояние в процессе, "успешно" завершенное другим событием).

Future Perfect Progressive.
Длительное действие к какому-то моменту в будущем:

● On Christmas Eve we will have been living in the same house for 20 years.

Примеры Past Perfect Progressive:

I finished with all the doubles, checked all the programs, and took up the nasty little problem that had been hanging over me for a long time.
Immediately he asked whether we had been talking about something important.
It had been four nights that I had been sleeping in a bag.
The sun had been setting for an hour and still couldn’t make it, hanging low on the horizon.
Maxim realized that he had been hearing it for some time before it broke through to his consciousness.
Zef explained that his detachment had been clearing quadrant 23/07 during the night, had destroyed four self-propelled ballistic missiles and one device of unknown function, and had lost two men in an explosion.
Maxim realized that someone, somewhere, had made the decision he had been awaiting and that he was in for a change.
And the captain, too, had been repeating the very same speech for three years.
Behind him were legionnaires, dragging the stocky body of the man who had been shooting.

I used to come here when I was a child.
Before we had television, people used to make their own entertainment.
I used to have a bicycle, but I sold it.

Be going to обозначает будущее предполагаемое действие (хотя может употребляться и в буквальном смысле – Jack is going to the university at this moment).

It'll rain, I expect. It always rains at weekends. (Мой прогноз основан на старом опыте).
It's going to rain. Look at those clouds. (Прогноз основан на уже видимых признаках).

I think we'll have time for a coffee. (will употребляется с выражениями типа I think – это подчеркивает, что прогноз взят "из головы").

It's ten already. We're going to be late. (Уже десять часов – поэтому мы, вероятно, опоздаем)
This fence is going to fall down soon. (Предсказание основано на видимом состоянии забора).

2) В случае, когда выражается намерение совершить действие, will употребляется, когда решение принимается фактически в момент речи, а be going to – когда оно было принято уже заранее:

I'll buy some postcards. (я сейчас принял такое решение)
I'm going to buy some postcards. (я уже решил это до этого)

Примеры из литературы:

I used to know one parrot who could growl like a tiger, but human-talk he could not do.
I used to only rely on myself, and now you’ve made me feel your power behind me. I used to lead every battle as if it were my last. And now I’ve noticed that I save myself for other battles, which will be decisive because you will stand beside me.
We used to call these kinds of plans “sturdy substantial skeletons.” The existence of such a skeleton was a necessary (although not sufficient) condition for beginning real work.
Gel used to talk about mountain folk medicine. They know how to heal wounds.
“I don’t know,” he said. “I used to think that Fank was connected somehow to the underground, but now I don’t know what to think.”
The Creators never knew what hit them and are now writhing in pain, hoofs up, as Captain Chachu used to say.

“You are going to sleep in a house,” said Hawk-nose, “on relatively clean sheets. There must be some way we can repay you….”
“It’s a bit embarrassing,” I said. “Don’t worry; it’s going to work out just fine…”
“Don’t worry yourself, ma’am,” I said. “I really don’t require anything. I’m going to just let you go.”
It feels close somehow; there is going to be a thunderstorm.”
I turned off the light and lay down. I am going to hear plenty from the crone tomorrow, I thought.
“Very soon it’s going to get very filthy here,” he explained. “Unbearably filthy.”
“Well, that’s the same thing,” he said. “Consider the possibility that I’m going to die right now. I’ve already started to have spasms. Also my extremities are growing cold.”

Unit 30. Выражение будущего.

И, говоря о будущем времени, можно добавить следующее правило.

Правило 13. При описании предполагаемых событий в будущем используются грамматические времена настоящего времени, если уже есть явная связь этих событий с чем-то в настоящем.

1) Be to – согласно официальным договоренностям.
The Prime Minister is to visit Budapest.
The two leaders are to meet for talks on a number of issues.

2) Present simple – согласно расписанию.
The game starts at 3.00 pm.

3) Present continuous – согласно договоренности.
I'm playing in the team tomorrow.

4) Be going to – на основании видимых в настоящем признаков.
This fence is going to fall down soon.

(но может выражаться и намерение: I'm going to buy a ticket, I've decided).

5) Be about to (можно добавить еще и это словосочетание) – так описывается ближайшее будущее.
The players are on the field. The game is about to start.

Когда предсказание, повторюсь, берется скорее "из головы" употребляется will:
Scotland will win the game (мне так кажется).

(При этом will может иметь и выраженный модальный оттенок – например, I think I'll buy a ticket).

Это уже не совсем относится к Future Progressive и Future Perfect, так как в этих случаях на первый план выходит то, что эти времена подчеркивают соответственно длительность будущего действия и то, что оно должно совершиться к какому-то моменту в будущем.

Future Progressive: I can't meet you at four. I'll be working.
Future Perfect: I'll have finished this book soon. I'm nearly at the end.

Unit 31.

The goalkeeper had injured his leg, and couldn’t play. The house had been empty for several months.
Past Perfect Progressive – процессы в прошлом до какого-то момента времени: She had been trying to finish her degree that year. Jane had been working hard, so her doctor told her to take a vacation.

ПРОШЛОЕ, НЕ СВЯЗАННОЕ С НАСТОЯЩИМ

Used to - действия или состояния в прошлом, которых больше нет: Used to I used to come here when I was a child. I used to have a bicycle, but I sold it.
Past simple – действия и состояния в прошлом: I attended a meeting of that committee last week. I telephoned Jack an hour ago. It snowed almost every weekend last winter. Professor Nelson taught at Yale for 30 years. He owed me a lot of money.
Past Progressive – действия в прошлом в процессе совершения: He was walking to school at 8:30 this morning. John was coughing all night long. Jane was washing her hair when the phone rang. While Alex was travelling in Europe, he ran into an old friend.
Present Simple – "историческое настоящее": That night Romeo sees Juliet alone on her balcony.
Present Progressive – "историческое настоящее": While Tom is standing up on the coach looking back at his father, the horses suddenly break into a gallop.

ПРОШЛОЕ, СВЯЗАННОЕ С НАСТОЯЩИМ

Present Perfect – действия или состояния, имеющие смысловую связь с настоящим: I have already seen that movie. Jack has just finished his homework. The journal has been published very month since 1950. I've known her for years . I have been a teacher since 1998. The value of the Johnson's house has doubled in the last four years.
Present Perfect Progressive – действия в процессе, продолжавшиеся до настоящего момента времени: It has been raining, but it has stopped now. I've been working for six hours and now I'll stop. We've been learning this language for ten years (and are still learning it).

"РАСШИРЕННОЕ" НАСТОЯЩЕЕ

Present Simple – регулярные действия и состояния: Water freezes at 0 degrees centigrade. She walks to school every day. I know Mr. Smith. The car belongs to Jack. I live in the country.
Present Progressive – временные длительные действия и состояния: I'm studying geology at the University of Colorado. Jane is living with her parents. Jack is getting up at five o'clock every day this week to prepare for his examination.
Present Progressive – длительные действия с акцентом на повторяемость или сам процесс: Tom is always working late at the office. The Rhine is always pouring its waters into the sea.

КОНКРЕТНОЕ НАСТОЯЩЕЕ

Present Progressive – действия в процессе совершения: He is attending a meeting now.
Present Simple – короткие действия в речи спортивных комментаторов: Sharapova serves.
Present Simple – короткие действия при демонстрации, например, кулинарных рецептов: Now I add three eggs to the mixture.
Present Simple – с глаголами декларации: I declare the meeting open.
Present Simple – с "статическими" глаголами: It smells sweet. I see a flat stretch of ground. I hear approaching feet.
Present Simple – в восклицательных предожениях: Here he comes! There she goes! Off they go!
Past simple – в вежливой речи: Did you want to sit down and stay a while?

БУДУЩЕЕ

Future Simple – предполагаемые говорящим события в будущем: Jane will take the bar exam next month. After October, Jack will take the 7:30 train to Chicago every day. Mary will live in Madrid until she improves her Spanish.
Future Progressive – действие в процессе в будущем: He will be taking a test at 8 a.m. tomorrow. Jane will be working on her thesis for the next three years.
Be to – будущие действия согласно официальным договоренностям: The Prime Minister is to visit Budapest.
Present Simple – будущие действия по расписанию: I have a meeting next Wednesday at that time. The plane leaves for London at nine o'clock tonight. (будущие запланированные действиях)
Present Progressive – запланированные действия: She's coming tomorrow.
Be going to – прогнозы, основанные на видимых признаках или при уже сложившемся намерении совершить действие: It's going to rain. Look at those clouds. I'm going to buy some postcards.
Present Simple – для получения или дачи инструкций касательно будущего: Where do I pay? Well, what do we do now?
Present Simple – в предложениях вида Why don't you...?: Why don't you take a day off tomorrow?

БУДУЩЕЕ, СВЯЗАННОЕ С КАКИМ-ЛИБО ПОСЛЕДУЮЩИМ МОМЕНТОМ В БУДУЩЕМ ЖЕ

Future Perfect Simple – действия, которые будут завершено к какому-то моменту в будущем: I will have finished all this word processing by 5 p.m.
Future Perfect Progressive – длительные действие в процессе совершения к какому-то моменту в будущем: Tom will have been studying for two hours by the time his friends arrives.

Unit 32. Итог по временам.

Это еще далеко не все, что может выражать глагольная группа, но уже можно подвести некоторый предварительный итог.
Итак, за основу необходимо, на мой взгляд, взять следующую простую схему:

I do / I am doing
I have done / I have been doing

Perfect Progressive.

(1)
'Hello George. I haven't met your sister yet'.
I saw George on Friday. I told him I hadn't met his sister yet.

We arrived at the station to find that the train had left two minutes before.

Perfect.

(I do/I am doing/I have done/I have been doing), "обезличивая" первый глагол в "цепочке" (это всегда личная форма).

Simple.
to do (не to does и не to will do (will – личный глагол, а does – чисто личная форма для 3-го лица ед. числа)

Progressive.
to be doing (фактически в I am doing, he is doing, they are doing надо заменить первый глагол на базовую форму – be).

Perfect Simple.
to have done (to has done и to had done быть не может: had и has – личные формы).

Perfect Progressive.
to have been doing (не to had been doing и не to has been doing – по той же причине)

Инфинитив выражает "чистое" действие и во всех случаях смысл соответственно грамматическому времени.
И все это тоже формы активного залога – инфинитив может быть и в пассиве, о чем тоже дальше.

Unit 34. Сложные формы причастия

И по такому же принципу образуются сложные формы причастия:

Правило 15. Все формы причастия можно получить из четырех грамматических времен (I do/I am doing/I have done/I have been doing), поставив первый глагол в "цепочке" в -ing форму (таким образом тоже "обезличивая" это глагольное сочетание).

asking (получаем из I [ask])
being asking (получаем из I [am asking])
having asked (получаем из I [have asked]).
having been asking (получаем из I [have been asking])

Формы, выделенные курсивом, на практике не употребляются: being asking – "масло масляное" из-за двух -ing, а having been asking – слишком громоздко.
О том, как их употреблять – позже, пока основной принцип, что все формы делаются на основе четырех базовых.

Unit 35. Пассив
Теперь формы пассивного залога. По сути пассив в английском не отличается от русского:

Shakespeare wrote 'Hamlet' / Шекспир написал "Гамлета" превращается в 'Hamlet' was written by Shakespeare/ "Гамлет" был написан Шекспиром.

Стоит отметить, что желательно различать пассив и конструкцию be+причастие. Во втором случае дело идет уже не о действии, а состоянии:

The windows were broken by the blast (здесь совершившееся действие)
The lock is always broken (здесь состояние – замок постоянно неисправен, а не то, что его постоянно ломают).

Но в ряде случаев из предложения может быть неочевидно, какая именно конструкция имеется в виду:

John and Mary were married last year.

Это может означать как и то, что они были женаты в течение этого года (состояние), так и то, что в какой-то момент в этом году они женились (действие).

Некоторыми ориентирами могут быть использование very (это возможно только с причастиями) и предложных оборотов иных чем с by.

I am very annoyed with him/I was annoyed by mosquitoes all night.
I am very interested in chess/I was interested by what you told me.
I am very surprised at you/I was surprised by a knock at the door.

Технически любая форма пассива образуется по простому правилу.

Правило 16. Форма пассивного залога всегда представляет собой глагол be в форме того времени, к которому относится пассив, и причастия прошедшего времени.

Simple.
I [am invited], he [is invited], they [were invited], they [will be invited] и т.п.

Progressive.
I [am being invited], he [was being invited], I will be being invited и т.п.

Perfect Simple.
I [have been invited], he [has been invited], he [will have been invited] и т.п.

Perfect Progressive.
I have been being invited, he has been being invited и т.п.

Формы, выделенные курсивом, на практике не применяются из-за громоздкости и сочетаний 'be being' и 'been being'.
Формы пассива в Progressive и Perfect вполне употребимы, но с точки зрения стилистики пассивные конструкции вообще непростая тема и в американских университетах учат ими не увлекаться.

Примеры из литературы:

The curtain, the corner of the stove, and [a whole lot of things] were reflected in the cloudy glass. But I wasn’t among them.
[A vast sofa] was placed against a bare wood wall, and a wardrobe stood against the other wall, [which] was decorated with assorted wallpaper.
“The road is quite decent,” I contradicted. “I was promised I couldn’t get through at all.”
[The windows of the lower story] were set with iron bars, and [the bottom halves] were painted white.
[The kids] were gone.
But there was a signal received here that [the keys entrusted to you] are piled in a heap on the table instead of being locked up in a box.”
The socks became culottes, and then pants, and now [they] are referred to as trousers.
[The sofa] is registered at the museum, as far as I am concerned, and that’s where it must be.”
“[Everything] is registered.. . Everything is in its place.”
“I am informed, comrade Demin, that Monday begins on Saturday,” Korneev said gloomily.
Here [the road] was overgrown with grass, but [a brand-new car manufactured in the Ukraine] was snuggled up against one of the gates.
“Inexcusable arrogance,” he said loudly, getting up. “I committed an error and I am prepared to admit it with complete candor. When such giants… and even these cheeky youngsters…”
[He] was kept in indefinite preliminary confinement while [an interminable investigation] was being conducted into his innumerable crimes.

[My suppositions] were being borne out.
“What does it mean?” I asked. “Could I at least learn where I am being impressed to work?”
[He] was being pursued by a spiderlike mechanism.
[The project] was being discussed right on the street with a considerable gathering of people, drawings being made with chalk on the sidewalks and walls.
While [they] were being sought, Cottus and Gyes started pelting each other with snowballs to warm up and broke two windowpanes.
[Chairs] were being moved in the office and I quickly finished my coffee.
[The labor legislationn] was being flagrantly ignored and I began to feel that I had lost all desire to struggle against this law-breaking...
“It’s an apparatus,” Korneev said hopelessly. “[It]’s being used in serious work.”

“What?” asked Roman. “Do you understand what you are saying? [It] has been healed for a long time. .
Prior to us, [this problem] has been tackled by persons absolutely devoid of imagination.
In reality [they] have been dialectically transformed into a new quality.
“ [The persons listed, starting with number four through number twenty-five, last and inclusive], have been admitted to night work posthumously. In recognition of past contributions. Now do you have it?”
“Will you desist,” said the unbending Modest. “We’ll appoint a commission yet and we’ll see if perhaps [the relic] has been damaged.
“Give back the sofa,” I said. “[A receipt] has been made out for it.”
“And why not so interpret it?” he inquired. “[Cases of it] have been attempted.”
[Much and tasty eating] has been done on it, I thought.
