Здравствуйте! объясните, почему в предложении The shorter is the night, the longer is the day. Глагол to be стоит перед подлежащим? Ведь в подобных предложениях, но уже со смысловым глаголом смысловой глагол после подлежащего: The sooner you start, the sooner you finish.
Спасибо.
сравнительная конструкция The...the....

5.5 Double comparatives - The bigger, the better etc
Optionally, we can invert in the second clause of a double comparative. This is not very common:
The nearer a house is to the city centre, the higher is the rent.
or more commonly:
The nearer a house is to the city centre, the higher the rent (is).
{Вывод:}
The more you pester him, the less is he likely do anything.
Inversion completely optional, and rather rare
PS Правда, там говорится только об инверсии во втором предложении...

Надо сказать, что и в предложении с обычным глаголом изредка встречается инверсия (не думал, что можно чем-то дополнить исчерпывающее исследование по ссылке выше, но упоминания об этом там не нашёл - по понятным причинам):Светлана_Б пишет: ↑06 июн 2019, 14:29 Ведь в подобных предложениях, но уже со смысловым глаголом смысловой глагол после подлежащего: The sooner you start, the sooner you finish.

The correct format of using double comparatives to show a cause and effect relationship is this:
The (comparative) + subject+ verb +, + the (comparative) + subject + verb.
At the same time, with the verb to be, it is equally possible to reverse the subjects and verb, ending up with the pattern
the (comparative) + to be+subject +,+ the (comparative) + to be+ subject:
As for the question, why in that particular sentence… And why not, since it's acceptable? The shorter is the night, the longer is the day.
As for the reversal placement of the verbs other than to be, these cases seem so rare that hard as I tried,
I couldn't find a site where this question was put, much less answered)

Я не поленился и поискал это в Google Books. Единственная книга где встречается такая конструкция:Светлана_Б пишет: ↑06 июн 2019, 14:29 Здравствуйте! объясните, почему в предложении The shorter is the night, the longer is the day.

Запятой тоже нет и авторы - Виталий Красюк, Нинель КрасюкThe longer is the day the shorter is the night.
В книгах нерусских авторов инвертируется только вторая часть:

Well, frankly, does that mean that all those examples above are ungrammatical?
If you suggest we need to find a relevant discussion on the net to make sure that the phenomenon is legitimate,
although there's some evidence in edited texts, then we can look here_Inversion in comparative sentence:
Does this make it legitimate?)DAVID, moderator пишет:If Novice {the TC} wants to use inversion, auxiliary inversion would work. We simply need to add an auxiliary. We can use dummy "do" or shift to "will":
The more (that) the forest area is destroyed, the more frequently do natural disasters occur.
The more (that) the forest area is destroyed, the more frequently will natural disasters occur.
I myself would opt for a more radical revision. This double comparative construction is special and thrives off of simplicity and parallelism:
The more we destroy forests, the more we will have natural disasters.
The more we destroy forests, the more will we have natural disasters.

Возможно, эта фраза - в оригинальных книжках встречается только в таком варианте.Харбин Хэйлунцзян пишет: ↑07 июн 2019, 15:10 В книгах нерусских авторов инвертируется только вторая часть:
Но если поискать в книгах другие варианты с такой же грамматикой, эта инверсия не кажется ошибкой русскоязычных авторов:
Gavin Reid - 2007 пишет:The longer is the PrecipitatorTime, the greater is the number of Precipitators ...
Mr. Leonardo Auernheimer, Ms. Susan Mary George - 1997 пишет:In some cases if a reform cannot be implemented within a certain length of time, then the longer is the transition period, the better.
etc.US National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health пишет:In perimenopause, the later is the melatonin peak, the higher is the level of anxiety (P = 0.022), and the longer is the melatonin secretion, the better is the quality ...
И, наконец, цитата из URCH_GMAT, GRE, eLearning, College Admissions, Networking.
Последний абзац - про возможность инверсии в обоих предложениях (с важным замечанием):
В свете этого замечания последняя цитата из US NLM NIH выше звучит особенно забавно.)A GMAT QUESTION WITH NO VERB? пишет:One final note – you should know that this particular construction also permits subject-verb inversion, so the previous sentences could also be written with the verbs before the subjects (though I must admit that to my American ears, these short sentences sound stilted or unnatural):
The stronger is the drug, the greater is the euphoria.
The smaller is the tumor, the better is the prognosis.
The smaller is the population, the greater is the effect.
The smaller is the plane, the greater is the selection.
The smaller is the plane, the greater is the damage.
And that’s it.

The shorter (is) the night (is), the longer (is) the day (is).
Хоть без глаголов вообще.) Сколько там вариантов получается?)
Думается, там, кроме региональных предпочтений, ещё фактор ритмики-стилистики (синтаксический параллелизм и длина подлежащего) может играть непоследнюю роль.

Yety,
Having learned the possible patterns,
I'm not into digging any deeper--enough is as good as a feast.
Thanks for the link to the random-idea-English site.
I said rarely used, not questioning grammatical legitimacy.

Из кмк важных замечаний/выводов по теме.
1) THE - здесь, конечно, не артикль, а рудимент указательного местоимения (сродни русским местоимениям чем-тем насколько-настолько):
3) Проверка (на примере сочетания "the higher is") замечания о неуклюжести инверсии с to be американского автора показала, что, действительно, в СОСА есть только пара примеров с инверсией to be в первом предложении:
4) В британском BNC тоже не много, но больше (все примеры ниже оттуда):
И, наконец, отрезок из экономической статьи - собрание всех вышеупомянутых особенностей:
1) THE - здесь, конечно, не артикль, а рудимент указательного местоимения (сродни русским местоимениям чем-тем насколько-настолько):
2) Термин double comparative нередко применяется к нестандартным формам сравнительной степени:M. Swan-4 пишет:Note that in this structure, the word the is not really the definite article - it was originally a form of the demonstrative pronoun, meaning 'by that much’.
GARNER’S MODERN ENGLISH USAGEПоказать
The Double Comparative.
Among literate speakers and writers, the double comparative is fairly uncommon.
But it does occasionally appear in print —e.g.: “Does it mean that change will be a bit more slower [read slower], a bit more careful, a bit more reasoned than totally revamping the health care system? Yes.” Leonard Marcus, “New Approach Needed to Restore System’s Balance,” Am. Medical News, 2 Dec. 1996, at 45. (If the writer of that sentence wanted the parallelism of three mores, then the first phrase should have been more slow .)
И несколько (7/9) с инверсией во втором.The larger is the map scale, or the higher is the spatial resolution, the more details of the coastline would be measured.
4) В британском BNC тоже не много, но больше (все примеры ниже оттуда):
5)If it is assumed that the expected volume of output is roughly equal to that experienced in the previous year,, then the higher is (deleted:formula), the greater will gross investment tend to be.
The higher is (deleted:formula), the higher is consumption expenditure and the higher is the level of aggregate demand.
The higher is the rate of inflation, the greater is the negative return from holding money and the more attractive are the alternative interest-bearing assets.
В свете этой гипотезы можно обратить внимание на встречающуюся "неразорванную" форму will be в некоторых примерах с длинным подлежащим, которая, строго говоря, как будто противоречит инверсии по вопросительному типу:
6) Косвенным свидетельством в пользу роли, которую играет длина подлежащего, может служить отсутствие оборотов с местоимениями в роли подлежащего вроде *the higher is it.Thus the 'law of demand' that the higher is the price the less will be the quantity demanded guides the economics predictions regarding tax changes.
The greater the excess supply of labour (the higher is unemployment), the greater will be the downward pressure on wages, though ...
И, наконец, отрезок из экономической статьи - собрание всех вышеупомянутых особенностей:
The amount of the deadweight burden is higher the higher is the marginal tax rate and the size of the wedge, but it also depends on supply and demand elasticities for the taxed commodity or activity. The more inelastic are supply and demand, the less the tax will change equilibrium quantity and the smaller will be the deadweight burden triangle.

I would like to say something about this, but the more I read, the less I understand what is going on.
As a native American speaker, I can say that I only use two versions of this thing. Taking the last phrase as the base:
1. The more inelastic supply and demand are, the less the tax will change equilibrium quantity and the smaller the deadweight burden triangle will be.
2. The more inelastic the supply and demand, the less the tax changes equilibrium quantity and the smaller the deadweight burden triangle.
The other variations sound odd to me.
