Это смешно. Попробуйте поискать "bacteria has" в Google Books. Замучаетесь.

UPDATE
Даже data используется по-новому только в смысле "информация" в текстах про компьютеры и Internet. При этом даже здесь принятое значение не единственное а неисчисляемое. В таком смысле и я употребляю это слово (я программист). Но вот datas напишет только последний dunce.

And one more metaphor (regarding descriptive vs prescriptive grammar and grammar rules) which I really like. It's longlish but worth your while:
At the same time, we must understand that the language will not be
completely regular. It may be difficult to believe, but language would
probably be even more regular but for the interference of teachers who
thought they were teaching grammar! (In case the reader thinks this
unorthodox view is a little too extreme, it is worth mentioning that exactly
the same point is made by Leech in Meaning and the English Verb,
Longman 1971 page 76/77).
Imagine, for example, a grammarian sitting on a beach 200 hundred years
ago surrounded by a large number of large pebbles. For some reason one of
these pebbles attracts his attention and he picks it up. The tide comes in
and out, moving the pebbles on the beach to and fro. The grammarian sees
a convenient rock, climbs up on it and, taking the pebble so he can examine
it, sits on the rock watching the tide come and go. It is hardly very surprising if, when two hundred years later, the grammarian drops the pebble he has been nursing onto the beach again it is quite different from all the other pebbles. All except this one have been worn away by the constant movement of the tide but, protected by the grammarian, one single pebble, once similar to all the others on the beach, is now clearly different.

That is very often exactly what has happened in language. Some linguistic fossils remain because the language was used in circumstances in which change was seen as a bad thing and, as a result, forms were protected and
preserved.
First grammarians, and perhaps worst of all teachers, have instilled
certain things about particular language items into students over the years.
Many people who have gone to school in Britain will remember being told
“use shall with the first person and will with the second and third”. The
most elementary investigation of how native speakers of English actually
use will and shall reveals that this “rule” has little, if anything, to do with the truth. Both will and shall are used (with slightly different meanings) in all persons (see Chapter 14). Unfortunately, when people use language,
The principle of general use particularly when they write it, they are strongly influenced by what they were taught in school — even if what they were taught was misguided!
I remember being taught that it was “correct” to say not It’s me, but It is
I. This is totally at variance with what 99% of (British) native speakers say.
But it retains some attraction for anyone who knows some Latin and
believes in Latin as a “grandparent” of English.

Человек не знает что означает это слово и явно использует его в смысле нарезанный картофель.
Трудно представить, что автор не знает слова "мульча, мульчировать, замульчированный". Особенно с учетом того, что многие (как будто) переходят на этот способ содержания в порядке придомной территории из эколог-/-номических соображений (чтоб не тратить деньги на бензин для газонокосилки/не загрязнять воздух выхлопами).
Так что претензия, скорее, к корректорам, которые проглядели mulched вместо munched(?) potatoes.

bacteria
Bremner 1980 and Evans 1957 remind us that this word is plural. Unlike some Latin-derived plurals, bacteria seems not to have much singular use. We do have such use in an indirect quotation printed in the New York Times in 1958 and in an instance taped from a radio interview with a cancer researcher in 1968. Our only written example is this:
But most of us would feel that this doesn't make the blue-green algae into a bacteria —letter to editor, Science News, 14 Jan. 1978

Bacteria is solidly plural and does not look to be in imminent danger of developing into a singular.

Evans 1957 thought the singular bacterium to be very rare. It is not, although it is not nearly so frequent as the plural.
[Kenneth Wilson]_The Columbia Guide to Standard American English -1993

bacteria (n.)
is the plural, which has much higher frequency of use than the singular, bacterium. Bacteria occurs occasionally as a singular in Nonstandard use, and insecurity over its correct singular form may well have given bug its popularity as a slang or Conversational substitute, meaning "an infection and its cause." See BUG; GERM; FOREIGN PLURALS.

bacterium is the singular form, and bacteria its plural . See -UM 2 . Erroneous uses of bacteria as a singular are regrettably common in newspapers: e.g.
A common gut bacteria may be a major cause of rheumatoid arthritis—Independent, 1991;

BACTERIA and BACTERIUM.
Bacteria is a plural word, denoting two or more of the microscopic, single-celled organisms that cause disease, putrefaction, and fermentation. In speaking of just one specimen of those organisms, that is, one cell, use bacterium, the singular. It is New Latin, from the Greek bakterion, small stick.

The excerpts are from a television feature, an article by a news agency, and a statement by a biologist, respectively.
One resistant bacteria can become sixteen million in twenty-four hours.
It should start: “One resistant bacterium.”
...Any method that sets the white and causes the yolk to begin to congeal will kill the bacteria unless it’s present in high numbers.
“It’s” should be they’re or they are.
For this bacteria . . . there’s practically no effect on any of them.
“For these bacteria . . .”

We may also speak of a single strain (or form or colony) of bacteria: “A new strain of bacteria has caused the outbreak of influenza.”
[Pam Peters]_The Cambridge Guide to English Usage -2004

bacteria and bacterium
To classicists and scientists, bacteria is unequivocally plural, and so These bacteria are dangerous is the only way to construe the word. The answer is less clear cut for others, especially in the US. Extensive data from nontechnical sources in CCAE show that the word is quite often construed as a collective or singular noun, as indicated by singular verb agreement:
Make sure that all the bacteria was taken care of
A bacteria called Listeria monocytogenes was found in icecream

Singular examples like these and plural ones occur in the ratio of about 2:5 in the database. Singular agreement often shows up when a particular strain of bacteria is being identified for the public, as in the second example. British sources contained in the BNC also provide evidence of bacteria in singular constructions:
Normal skin bacteria breaks down into irritating free-fatty acids.
When a bacteria or a virus gets into us . . .

Such examples are from nonscientific communication, but they confirm the use of bacteria as a collective or singular noun, which needs to be recognized in dictionaries.

Bacteria is of course a Latin plural (see -a ), whose singular is the rather rare bacterium. The ratio between them is 10:1 in British data from the BNC, and about 12:1 in American English from CCAE. The rarity of bacterium helps to explain why bacteria itself is increasingly used as a singular, at least in nonscientific writing.

bacteria, the plural form of bacterium, takes a plural verb. From the mid-19th century, the term has predominantly been treated as a plural—e.g.:
• “Scientists reported today a sharp increase in antibiotic-resistant strains of the bacteria that cause pneumonia, meningitis and other diseases.”
“Sharp Rise Found in Resistance of Pneumonia Bacteria to Drugs,” N.Y. Times, 25 Aug. 1995, at A18.
• “Some bacteria are pathogenic (disease causing) but many are beneficial, even essential to our health.” Richard T. Bosshardt, “If Yogurt Doesn’t Help, Probiotics May Be Solution,” Orlando Sentinel, 1 Sept. 2002, Lake §, at K12.
See PLURALS (B).

Yet since the late 19th century, some writers have ignored the plural form and erroneously treated bacteria as singular—e.g.:
• “A second youth remained in the hospital yesterday suffering with the bacteria that causes [read cause] meningitis.”
Gail Hulbert, “High School Returning to Normal Following Meningitis Scare,” Providence J.-Bull., 25 Sept. 1996, at C5.
• “And so the bacteria spreads [read spread].” Angela Allen, “Hidden Threat: Food-Borne Illness,” San Diego Union-Trib., 5 Oct. 1997, at A1.
• “In all, 178 people were stricken with salmonella—a common bacteria [read the common bacteria] that causes [read cause] food poisoning—and 22 were hospitalized with diarrhea, cramps, fever, nausea and other symptoms.” Jerry W. Jackson, “Bad Luck Takes a Seat at Darden’s Table,” Orlando Sentinel, 2 Sept. 2002, CFB §, at 16.
The singular usage shows no signs of gaining ground in frequency of use.

Я как-то упустил тогда это ваше замечание. То есть вы считаете что пережеванный картофель тут укладывается в контекст?

Да как-то встречал не только в значении пережёванный, но и протёртый, кяп:
We were served with butternut, fried Irish and munched potatoes.
PULL PORK MEAT PIE; Cover the bottom of pan with munched potatoes Then one layer of bell peppers in small peace's ; Spice the pork if you wish.
