Are cliches to be avoided?

Hi everyone.
Recently, I have come across some books dealing with cliches and hackneyed expressions. One of them is A Dictionary Of Cliches by Eric Partridge.
I am flicking through it now, and as far as I can say, it is a must-read if you would like to enlarge your arsenal of idioms. It offers a veritable smorgasbord of idioms, phrasal verbs, and fixed expressions.
However, reading this book makes me wonder.
What is the point of using those idioms if they have become cliches? Wouldn't it be better if we were more inventive on our part? Shouldn't we let our imagination soar?
Perhaps, the question begins to make sense only after a certain juncture in our linguistic endeavours whereupon we are able to use a vast array of those idioms flexibly.
Please share your thoughts.

Всю зиму я плевал в потолок и бил баклуши, но потом решил не зарывать талант в землю, засучил рукава и взялся за английские идиомы. Сначала бился как рыба об лед и плакал кровавыми слезами, но зато теперь я идиомы знаю как свои пять пальцев, и они отлетают у меня от зубов. Сдал все кембриджские экзамены на высший балл, не ударил в грязь лицом, так что теперь я стреляный воробей. Решил ковать железо, пока горячо, и сдать TOEFL до кучи.
))) Idioms are fine, just don't go overboard with them. It is generally advisable to avoid cliches, but I believe the rules are different for us, non-native speakers.

tourist, not every idiom is a cliche, not every cliche is an idiom, and not all cliches should be unequivocally shunned (this all sounds like a well worn-out cliche :)).

I won't touch them with a ten-foot pole
And in my life they'll never play a role
My cliches will go up in smoke
or just go down in flames
I've reached the point of no return
My English won't be the same.

That's funny to discover that so many people have a penchant for wordplay and puns of any kind.

Surprisingly, despite the fact that I enjoy a play on words when I see or hear it, I find it difficult to come up with expressions that can spice up my writing a bit and appear felicitous at the same time.paveltashkinov пишет: ↑05 май 2019, 10:15 That's funny to discover that so many people have a penchant for wordplay and puns of any kind.

Easy-Breezy English, thanks! This is the kind of phrasing I would like to be able to come out with natirally and spontaneously.
