Я помню, как когда-то на старом форуме одна из участниц писала, что английская грамматика плохо проработана и там путают формы и функции, когда используют систему subject-verb-object.
Это, разумеется, не так, просто в англоязычной традиции, поскольку центральный функциональный элемент предложения (в том виде, как его определили) всегда реализуется глагольной формой, решили и назвать его тоже verb.
Нельсон об этом пишет так:

Notice that, following traditional practice, we use the word verb in two distinct senses:

1. Like the subject, the verb is a constituent in sentence structure. In [1] the verb of the
sentence is stroked and in [2] it is has been working:

[1] Anthony stroked his beard.
[2] Ellen has been working all day.

2. ‘Verb’ is also one of the word classes, just like ‘noun’, ‘adjective’, ‘preposition’, and so on. In this sense, [2] contains three verbs: the auxiliaries has and been and the main verb working. The three verbs in [2] form a unit, which is called
a verb phrase.

Но это, тоже разумеется, не всем нравится, поэтому для различения были придуманы некоторые другие названия – например, для названия элемента используют термин verbal element, прямо подчеркивая, что это элемент предложения.
И еще один из современных вариантов – использовать для названия функции термин Predicator.

Now we will look inside the Predicate, and assign functions to its constituents. Recall that the Predicate is everything apart from the Subject. So in David plays the piano, the Predicate is plays the piano. This Predicate consists of a verb phrase, and we can divide this into two further elements:
[plays] [the piano]
In formal terms, we refer to the verb as the PREDICATOR, because its function is to predicate or state something about the subject. Notice that Predicator is a functional term, while verb is a formal term:

FORM - Verb
FUNCTION - Predicator

However, since the Predicator is always realised by a verb, we will continue to use the more familiar term verb, even when we are discussing functions.

И еще с одного сайта – то же самое:

Predicator
A predicator is the verb in its functional relation to the clause. It is comparable to the grammatical relations of subject and object.
The term predicator can be used to refer to the verbal element in Subject-Verb-Object constructions, that is, Subject-Predicator-Object. This avoids the confusion of using verb to refer to both a form and a function.
