Easy-Breezy English пишет: 15 апр 2019, 09:18 Похоже на off of. Тоже тавтология, но слышу постоянно.
Об этом же чуть короче Preposition: She fell <off, off of> the horse.
Вердикт: of is redundant, not for formal usage, probably more AmE than BrE.

Off с of как-то получается... смачнее что ли. Что-то это of там добавляет, но не могу сформулировать точно.

Тут, похоже, фразовый глагол ease on с предлогом out of, где факультативное ON выражает значение продолжения действия, как в read on:
https://idioms.thefreedictionary.com/eased+on+out
ease (on) out (of something )
1. . Lit. to continue moving out of something, slowly and carefully.
I was able to ease on out of the parking space, but only with difficulty. I looked both ways and eased on out.
В последнем примере нет дополнения - поэтому сдвоенная частица.

По моему fall off, означая первоначально "упасть С", стал восприниматься просто как "упасть" и для указания "С чего?" появилось of. Два off подряд чересчур даже для американцев.)

Лексико-грамматическая избыточность, плеоназм, - залог эксплицитности, придаёт выразительность (иногда:)).
Fell off the bike - предлог относится к сущ., идея выражена однократно.
Fell off of the bike - послелог модифицирует глагол, предлог дублирует-усиливает его действие:
С-валился С велика.

The 'of' in 'out of' is also redundant, isn't it? Sorry if it's been mentioned already. Here Americans go in the opposite direction, omitting the 'of'. "Get out the car!"

To get something out of something. To get something off of something. Don't they follow the same pattern? The 'of' in the latter makes the same (zero?) sense as in the former.

You climb 'out of the window' but not 'in of the window'. Why? If it doesn't make sense in the latter, why should it make it in the former? Or, if it does make sense, why not 'jump off of the roof', then?

Well, this one kind of makes sense. Get something out of (from within) some object/place. You can't really drop of.
Get your hands out of your pockets!
Get your hands out your pockets!

Or it's used as a phrasal verb:
It was a really boring course and I don't think I got much out of it.

But to get something off OF the Internet? Of seems totally redundant, yet it is widely used.
acapnotic пишет: 17 апр 2019, 16:58 why not 'jump off of the roof', then?

"Get out the car" is also used. People do drop the 'of'. So it can be done. Why not? What role does it play? Why isn't it used with 'in''?

Depends on the grammar, I guess. But lots of people seem to say it. Logically speaking, why not? In the window, out the window.

Вроде бы уже это обсуждали (когда-то). Эти фразы могут иметь разные значение. У меня складывается (судя по ответам в гугле), что эта разница может сильно зависеть от личного диалекта говорящего фразу. Некоторые считают, что особой разницы нет, некоторые считают, что "out the window" sounds odd, а "out of the window" нормально, другие считают, что наоборот.
Ну и в зависимости от контекста тоже может считаться допустимым или нет то или иное использование.
Мне лично нравится вариант диалекта, в котором "out" используется просто для направления наружу, а "out of" воспринимается как изнутри какого-то предмета (типа контейнера). То есть просто "out" это как "through", а "out of" это "from within".

I thought it was American. Probably after reading replies like this.
Q:
Do you say "run out of the door" or "run out the door"? Do you say "look out of the window" or "look out the window"? Are both fine? Do they have the same meaning?

A:
Yes, either one is fine. It is more common in the US to say "out the door", maybe because we're always in a hurry, so it's one less word to say ;) Anyway, they have the same meaning.
Easy-Breezy English пишет: 17 апр 2019, 20:16 Sounds like you are asking someone to get the car out of the garage or something like that.
OK, then 'get off the roof' sounds like you are asked to remove the roof of a building? Even though it can, it's not a big problem because context and intonation will make the meaning clear. I don't see why they wouldn't work just as well for 'out'.

On the other hand, I can see how the 'of' in 'out of' helps disambiguation. That's why I think people follow the same logic when they say 'off of'. So, as soon as you get used to it, it will make a lot of sense to you, just as it does now in 'out of'. :)

acapnotic, thanks for the food for thought!

Come to think of it, I’ll say out the door every time and out the window more often than out of the window. However, for the window speed seems to be the deciding factor somehow. If something is literally flying out, I’m more likely to drop of, while if something is seeping out, I’ll probably keep it. At the same time I’ll never say out the car. If I want to sound girly, I’ll say off of, while to sound more authoritative I’ll probably drop of.

This is fun! And you are right - it does seem somewhat arbitrary.

No wonder. Just stumbled on this in a great grammar book:
