Я бы тоже что-нибудь попроще, типа "she's about to ...". В COCA verge's most common collocates are tears, collapse, losing, bankruptcy, extinction, war, breakdown, death, and so on. For brink it's a little better, but not by much.

Wow. And the first example that comes to my mind is Jerome K. Jerome's description of spring from "Three men in a boat":Easy-Breezy English
Would never have thought this word has a negative connotation.IT was a glorious morning, late spring or early summer, as you care to take it, when the dainty sheen of grass and leaf is blushing to a deeper green; and the year seems like a fair young maid, trembling with strange, wakening pulses on the brink of womanhood.

Of course brink/verge may have a negative connotation:
on the brink of nuclear war or on the verge of despair.
On the other hand we have on the verge of victory/success or
on the brink of a major (scientific) breakthrough
but QwestDay specifically stated:
To muddy the waters even further...
Imagine this happy and optimistic millennial / GenZ girl
is about to enter the REAL world, free from her helicopter parents , away from her safe spaces,
waving her useless "Gender Study" degree from, say, the Nizhnij Novgorod branch of Moscow school of economics.
Imagine her trying to find a decent employment.
Imagine her dealing with potential male rapists, and hostile attitude towards her gender transitioning..
Got the picture ?
Can I now say that she is on the verge of a ... well .. a new life ? ))

Totally fine in this context!
Check out their most frequent collocates in COCA, though. You'll be surprised how negative they are. I would attach screenshots but I don't know how to do it on this message board.

Easy-Breezy English,
fascinating:

Seems as if the "bad" is slowly winning over the "good" here.

Check this out:
It's even more striking if you actually run those words through a corpus and look at the frequencies. I'd say their collocates are overwhelmingly negative. It might have changed over time. I don't really know what it sounded like a hundred years back. ))Juliemiracle пишет: ↑06 май 2019, 18:27 Seems as if the "bad" is slowly winning over the "good" here.

- с запасом ... in abundance/plentiful/ more than enough ...
For most food products
sell-by-date means that the store must sell the item by a certain date. It has little to do with safety.
best before is a recommended period for the peak quality, also not about safety.
I've seen and tasted perfectly good canned meat (тушенка) made in 1945 (army surplus)

I call up my parents experience,

QwestDay,
Nonchalant girl - feeling or showing no excitement, fear or other emotions
e.g.
a) …give yourself a little time and be very casual, nonchalant, and natural about sex…
b) she is nonchalant about sex…
1) nonchalant (adj)= if you describe someone as nonchalant, you mean that they appear not to worry or care about things and they seem very calm. e.g…. It underlines our rather more nonchalant attitude to life…
2) nonchalance (n) = indifference, unconcern, casualness, carelessness
3) nonchalantly (adv) =
Beasting (especially in the armed forces) the process of subjecting a new recruit to harsh treatment in order to instill discipline. May refer to hard training, beatings, sexual humiliation or any number of strange and unpleasant experiences.

uninhibited.
Oxford:
uninhibited adjective
BrE /ˌʌnɪnˈhɪbɪtɪd/ ; NAmE /ˌʌnɪnˈhɪbɪtɪd/
behaving or expressing yourself freely without worrying about what other people think.
I’m a fairly uninhibited sort of person.
The loud music made him feel totally uninhibited.
His friends were a lively, uninhibited crowd.
It was an evening of uninhibited fun.
The kids were uninhibited and came to music class fresh.

Irina,
Слово uninhibited означает - 1) behaving or expressing yourself freely without worrying about what other people think; 2) в другом словаре дается следующее определение – not inhibited or restricted; not restrained, as by social convention or usage; 3) в словаре Roget’s International Thesaurus это слово дается в одном синонимическом ряду со словами: out of control, wild, immoderate, unreined, loose, unrestrained и т.д. Думаю, что слово uninhibited больше определяет поведение и высказывания на публике (out of control, wild).
She tried to be nonchalant as she moved a stack of books and the laundry basket, making room for both of them…
