Juliemiracle пишет: 23 мар 2019, 23:15 'unfathomable'
Yay! Love that wicked word.)
There's fathom ['fæðəm] - a measurement of 1.8 metres or 6 feet, used when referring to the depth of water.
So when one can't fathom something, they are unable to understand it as it's too deep complicated.
It's even transcribed into Russian as 1) фатом, фадом (английская единица длины; = 6 футам, или 182 см) and is also translated as морская сажень (which is very close to the маховая сажень of 176 cm).

There's even an echo-sounding device, to measure the depth, of course :
Изображение
- [fæ'ðɔmɪtə], again transliterated as фатометр.
So, 'unfathomable' has gotta be something so deep, even immeasurable, immense - ex profundis of a 'bottomless' 'abyss')).

And one of mine is surely encumber (incumber):
she was encumbered by her heavy skirts
they had arrived encumbered with families

Zlatko_Berrin пишет: 23 мар 2019, 16:04 'maintain'
acapnotic пишет: 23 мар 2019, 17:01 There is also the difference between it and 'sustain', which is not always easy to figure out.
All those -tain verbs are related to the core idea of holding.)

'Maintain' - "from Latin manu tenere ‘hold in the hand’, so it is usually about what you can hold in your hand(s) in one way or another. As figuratively as it may be used), it still remains rather concrete:
СпойлерПоказать
to maintain roads
to maintain a family
this car/this house is well maintained
to maintain a position
to maintain contact(s)/friendly relations with
to maintain an interest in
to maintain peace
to maintain one's composure
to maintain one's health
to maintain order
He maintained himself against his many enemies.
doctrine maintained by many scientists
He maintains that no child is really bad.
'Sustain', on the other hand, - from Latin sustinere, from sub- ‘from below’ + tenere ‘hold’ - remains more abstract, with no hands:) involved):
СпойлерПоказать
to sustain combustion
his belief in God sustains him
to sustain growth
to sustain a claim
to sustain a defeat
to sustain an electoral shock
to sustain casualties
to sustain employment
to sustain losses
He sustained a stress.
to sustain severe damage in an accident
to sustain terrible injuries
to sustain punishment
Yet, the two words seem to sort of converge sharing one meaning in the end:
enough food to maintain life
Food sustains life; a good breakfast will sustain us all day

You might as well compare (hands/no hands):
He maintains his interest in sth. VS It sustains his interest in sth.
He maintains that this case undoubtedly sustains his assertion.

Yes, that's the key! Unfortunately this connection remained a mystery to me until yesterday. :) As to 'fathom', I grasped the word the first time I saw it. Maybe because its voluminous and muffled sound matched my idea of deapth very well.

This 'hands' component is indeed an eye-opener. I must have known that it was there but somehow it slipped my mind. This again shows how helpful etymology can be in such cases. Concrete meanings are much easier to grasp and remember because they give you an image to hold on to.
Yety пишет: 24 мар 2019, 00:14 And one of mine is surely encumber (incumber):

I first encountered this word in 'cumbersome', which by its very sound seems to give an idea of something difficult to deal with. This word definitely speaks to me.

If that is a trend, we are probably going to hear some day 'information' stressed on the first syllable.

Well, Americans seem to have no problem stressing the first syllable of a 5(!)-syllable word:
A further -atory difference is laboratoryB2: AmE /ˈlæbərətɔːri/ and BrE /ləˈbɒrətəri/.[33]
So, it's only natural they follow the logic of the universally pronounced 4-syllable -able word - `admirable [æ̱dmɪrəb(ə)l] across the pond), as well:
to admIre -> Admirable (Br.+Am.), to despIse -> dEspicable (Am.)

Who can resist the temptation of reducing a 5-syllable word to a 4-syllable one with an /-ɔː-/ almost bearing a secondary stress?

English words? Because in Russian "загрузить/выгрузить" have practically become synonymous in some people's idiolect, apparently (and this drives me up the wall).

Never heard it stressed on the first syllable. Unless someone is trying to mimic Daffy Duck, I guess. But even Daffy stresses it on the second, really. He's just overpronouncing the first syllable. But that's humor, anyway.

Well, laboratory is more like a 4-syllable word in AmE actually. The first "o" is almost completely dropped, so for all intents and purposes the word turns into /læbrətəri/.
