Just for the record - the joke wasn't intended as a mocking of Sam Beckett or his writing (the discussed sentence). I guess I got a little carried away because of the 'the or not-the' discussion).

Back to the 'gauntlet' problem. The main takeaway of all this story, in my opinion, is it's okay not to know all the words or idioms. This happens in our native tongue from time to time too.

P.S. My apologies if I used some idioms in this comment ;))

Why do you have the need to use every idiom you've come across?

When you have a lot of input that's happens organically. Words and idioms just come effortlessly to you when u speak. And that's a good thing, a sign that you're on a right track, because that's how natives speak. The key here is to use the right ones aka those that are from your target dialect and are currently in use by natives of your generation and cultural background. And in this case alanta nailed it imo.

my idiomulary

An interesting, even intriguing coinage. Is it your own? A self-envented word, a neologism of a sort? A joke?
A lack of the word meaning one's overall command of idiomatic language or just a playful nod to idiomatic competence/proficiency/mastery/fluency? But what I'm wondering most is whether anglophones would grasp its meaning the way I did if they were to encounter it. :-)

To be honest, I don't really like how this word looks or sounds. Maybe 'idiom-ary' would be a better choice. But the short version of 'vocabulary' is 'vocab', I wasn't sure if the intended meaning would be clear without the '-ul-' part.

Btw, I found myself using more sayings and proverbs even in Russian so there's a need for using them in English as well. So please keep using them in your speech, it's very beneficial for learners like me.

Тут следует осознавать один момент. Это значение отличается этимологически от того которое 'хозяин'. Этимологически это армия.

Это значение отличается этимологически от того которое 'хозяин'. Этимологически это армия.

Прикольно, что от одного пракорня происходят в некотором смысле слова с противоположными - "комплементарными" - значениями..))
От *ghos-ti- происходит как "гость" (guest), так и "хозяин" (host), их принимающий.))

И по линии "гостя" мысль развивалась тоже без особых ограничений: "пришелец" - "гость" - "враг" - "воинство" - "множество"....

И даже "гостия" host - в смысле "облатка" - тоже происходит, как считается, от host, который "пришелец, враг, жертва".

Не редкие. Я пожалуй только Sanctimonious никогда нигде не встречала. И еще Undaunted, наверно. При этом Daunting вполне себе встречала много раз.

У меня в голове к слову sanctimonious сразу автоматически подставляется существительное bastard. Не знаю почему, не помню где встречал такую коллокацию.
