Clutch performance in sports is the phenomenon of athletes under pressure or "in the clutch"[1], usually in the last minutes of a game, to summon strength, concentration and whatever else necessary to succeed, to perform well, and perhaps change the outcome of the game. It occurs in basketball, hockey, football, esports, and other sports but the phrase is most common in baseball (e.g clutch hitter). ...
The opposite is "choking": failing to perform as needed, when under pressure.
...
The term gained popularity due to repetitive use among sports commentators, particularly baseball announcers. Consequently, a portion of the academic literature is focused on baseball, more specifically on clutch hitting, and addresses the academic issue of whether it exists or not.

chokeПоказать
In sports, a choke is the failure of a sportsperson or team in a game in a situation where maintaining their performance is highly important.[1] This can occur in a game or tournament that they are strongly favored to win, or in an instance where they have a large lead that they squander in the late stages of the event. It can also refer to repeated failures in the same event, or simply infer an unexpected failure when the event is more important than usual.
Most athletes experience physical and mental changes during stages of increased tension in competition. They may change their strategy as a coping mechanism, and play more cautiously as a result.[2] In instances where this strategy fails, a player or team many lose confidence to the point of panic, where they are incapable of completing the most rudimentary of tasks.[3][4] Choking in sport can be considered a form of analysis paralysis.[5]
The term itself is often an over-used, or even derisive term in the sports world, where "choke" status is assigned to a team or player that was simply unlucky. The term "clutch" is gaining popularity to describe the opposite of choking.[6] Outside of North America, other terms, such as 'bottling it', 'lose one's nerve', or 'panic' are more widely used.

Новое значение знакомых слов...

а) рюмка спиртного, выпиваемая вечером б) вечерняя попойка

ночная/вечерняя спутанностьПоказать
Sundowning, or sundown syndrome,[1] is a neurological phenomenon associated with increased confusion and restlessness in patients with delirium or some form of dementia. Most commonly associated with Alzheimer's disease, but also found in those with other forms of dementia, the term "sundowning" was coined due to the timing of the patient's confusion. For patients with sundowning syndrome, a multitude of behavioral problems begin to occur in the evening or while the sun is setting.[2][3][4] Sundowning seems to occur more frequently during the middle stages of Alzheimer's disease and mixed dementia. Patients are generally able to understand that this behavioral pattern is abnormal. Sundowning seems to subside with the progression of a patient's dementia.[2][3] Research shows that 20–45% of Alzheimer's patients will experience some sort of sundowning confusion.[2][5]

правда, насколько замечательное, настолько и бесполезное: даже в кругу образованных нейтивов употребление этого слова будет расценено как ненужный выпендреж )- I haven't had a proper shit in six days.
- I've encountered this problem before, my lord. The stresses of power often have this insalubrious effect.

unhealthy, unhealthful
harmful
hurtful
injurious
baneful
detrimental
pernicious
unsalutary (insalutary)
insalubrious
