Learning languages is like learning how to Sing!
Very few people are able to pick up sheet music and sing a song correctly without ever having heard it before. I'd bet that nobody can. In order to get a song to sound "right", you definitely should have heard it dozens of times before. Sheet music just can't record all the details of what the voice does.
Writing systems are the same for spoken languages. A lot of things happen with sound that just can't be recorded in writing. This is why I'm such a big supporter of getting fluent through listening.
I didn’t use to be this way. I could not learn a word if I couldn’t see it written down. I learned to overcome this fear by accident and the language “clicked” on for me. Only then did I realize that I had been holding myself back just because I lacked confidence and didn’t think I could learn by audio. But it’s true, and it’s how we learned language in the first place.
I hope you’re able to open your ears and experience what I've experienced. I'd like to see you make a big jump in your language ability this winter. If you start training your listening, I'm willing to bet that your speaking will start to flow and I want to get you to start to feel that difference in just the next few weeks. And I know that you'll be getting closer to that day that the language "clicks" on inside.
