Dashing through the snow
In a one-horse open sleigh
O'er the fields we go
Laughing all the way.
The bells on bob tail ring,
They make our spirits bright.
What fun it is to ride and sing
A sleighing song tonight!
Jingle bells, jingle bells,
Jingle all the way.
Oh! what fun it is to ride
In a one-horse open sleigh.
Jingle bells, jingle bells,
Jingle all the way.
Oh! what fun it is to ride
In a one-horse open sleigh.
A day or two ago
I thought I'd take a ride
And soon Miss Fanny Bright
Was seated by my side,
The horse was lean and lank,
Misfortune seemed his lot,
He got into a drifted bank
And we - we got upsot.
Now the ground is white
So go it while you're young,
Take the girls tonight
And sing this sleighing song,
Just get a bobtailed bay
Two forty as his speed,
Then hitch him to an open sleigh
And crack! you'll take the lead.

There are some errors in the text.
I've seen so many versions that saying one is incorrect sounds strange to me. Though if you present a version that is good from your point of view, I will gladly forfeit mine.
Bells on bobtail ring, [here bobtail refers to a tail cut short, I think]
Making spirits bright.
What fun it is to ride and sing
A sleighing song tonight!
We mostly sang only the first two verses, so I don't know about the others. But I've never seen "bells" with the definite article. Also,I always thought Fanny Brice, but then again I learned for the first time the phrase "bad moon on the rise" which I always heard as "bathroom on the right"!

Yes, but I don't think here it refers to the tail itself (just can't imagine bells dangling from it). Probably here it is the horse - a bobtailed horse.

As to Fanny/Fannie, Wikipedia says her family name is Bright. But they have the first two lines as you put them.
I have two questions. To me the version without the article is not grammatically correct - those are quite definite bells. And then it breaks the rhythm. Here it is sung with the article:
I just can not imagine dropping it - it will bungle it.
Nevertheless I'm going to concede if you present the full version as you like it. After all you are the only one here belonging to this song's home land. :)

Russian English is the best English ever
