there isn't such a rule/there's no such _ rule
'No' is too aggressive to tolerate the article, when the former is capable to perform the function of the latter.)

Probably, but I have a sneaking suspicion that "The New York Times"-authors have already mastered the language))Michelangelo
Anyway, I am used to trusting such sources.

Hm-m. It sounds like a quote... Maybe the sportsman isn't a native speaker. However, there are many other examples there... I don't know how to check whether you are right or not.It is not my style to go to a marathon if I am not 100percentt sure that I am capable to perform in a high level and be able to win.

Just look up the phrase in any online dictionary and decide for yourself who is wrong. Even native speakers make mistakes once in a while, much to my surprise, I've actually spotted quite a few of them in another reputable newspaper. Does "Los Angeles Times ring a bell?
It is never a good idea to blindly follow the crowd, even if it is entirely comprised of native speakers who are supposedly much better at English than we are, sometimes you should take a step back and do exactly the opposite. They tend to incorrectly use its and it's, me and I and as far as I can see ,some of them are not always able to distinguish between "able to" and "capable of doing".

Since July 2014 we have been developing Ludwig (www.ludwig.guru), the first linguistic whisperer that allows anyone to write in English with confidence.

An apple - The apple – No apple
“No” is capable of performing the function of “an” or “the”
I’m a bear. My name is No. I’m too aggressive to tolerate other bears in my den. Neither An nor The.
BTW, Yety charmingly explains “boring grammar rules”. I wish I had such a teacher at school. If I had, I would be able to write now as well as Tourist does.

You have reminded me about the occasion that happened a few days ago. My wife went shopping and asked me to stay home to look after our daughter. As she left Vika (daughter) led me to the kitchen to play “making food”. I gave her some clay and her toy tools in the hope to do some chores while she was playing. In a moment the whole kitchen was in a total mess. “Take the broom, scoop and sponge and tidy up. We are not supposed to let your mother see that”, - said I giving her a bucket of water, and proceeded to cut the meat. No sooner had I begun then she came up with a new game “fishing”. There was a great pond on the floor and a fishing rod made of the mop in her hands. “Oh, my! Step aside!”, - yelled I and rushed to wipe the puddle that our floor-below-neighbour not to knock at the door angrily. While I was wiping she found a pair of scissors… Now I am looking forward to the spring for my plants to breed new stems and my dog still embarrassingly has to turn tail because of it’s new “hairstyle”…Yep, I know I am “brake”, and the girl takes after her mother, she is too quick for me. Dear moms! I can’t imagine how you manage to bring up 2, 3, 4… children, when I’m not able to cope with even my the sole rascal!

I wish I had had such... If I had had...
