Exam Skills for Russia unit 4.

Chris: Welcome to the cupola, ready to play a little music!
Ed: Indeed! Your scenery looks a little nicer than ours!
Have you got everything you need?
Do you have your trusty floating guitar pick with you?
Excellent.
Mine is subject to gravity.
Yeah, I know, yours matches your mission patch.
Gleeks, are you guys ready to do this?
Gleeks: Yeah!!
Ed: Chris? Ready to go?
Chris: Yes, Ed, I'm ready.
Ed: Okay!
Chris: Let's do this!
Ed: Let's do it.
I.S.S. Commander Chris Hadfield + The Barenaked Ladies and the Wexford Gleeks
I.S.S. (Is Somebody Singing)
Ed:
On solid fuel and wires
Turn the key and light the fire.
We’re leaving Earth today
This rocket's burning bright,
We’ll soon be out of sight,
And orbiting in space.
Ed and Chris:
Pushed back in my seat,
Look out my window.
There goes home.
That ball of shiny blue
Houses everybody anybody ever knew.
All together:
So sing your song, I’m listening
Out where stars are glistening
I can hear your voices bouncing off the moon
If you could see our nation
From the International Space Station
You’d know why I want to get back soon.
Gleeks: Get back soon...
Chris:
Eighteen thousand miles an hour
Fueled by science and solar power
The oceans racing past...
At half a thousand tons
Ninety minutes moon to sun
A bullet can’t go half this fast
Ed and Chris:
Floating from my seat
Look out my window
There goes home
Gleeks: There goes home...
Ed and Chris:
That brilliant ball of blue
All together:
Is where I’m from, and also where I’m going to...
So sing your song,
I’m listening
Out where stars are glistening
I can hear your voices bouncing off the moon
If you could see our Nation
From the International Space Station
Chris: You’d know why
I want to get back soon
Gleeks: Get back soon...
Ed: All black and white just fades to grey
Where the sun rises sixteen times a day
Chris: You can’t make out borders from up here
Just a spinning ball within a tiny atmosphere
Gleeks: Atmosphere...
Ed and Chris:
Pushed back in my seat
Look out my window
Here comes home
Gleeks: Ho-oooh-home....
Ed and Chris:
What once was fueled by fear
All together:
Now has fifteen nations orbiting together here.
So sing your song, I’m listening
Out where stars are glistening
I can hear your voices bouncing off the moon
If you could see our nation
From the International Space Station

...Ride’s launch on STS-7 occurred almost to the day of the 20th anniversary of the launch of the first woman in space, Soviet cosmonaut Valentina V. Tereshkova. After the successful flight of Yuri Gagarin, the first man in space in April 1961, Soviet Chief Designer Sergey Korolyov had the idea of flying a woman in space. To find a suitable candidate, he looked outside the field of military pilots. Although piloting was not a requirement for the female candidates (the Vostok spaceship was more or less automated), parachuting was, because after reentry Vostok cosmonauts ejected from the capsule and parachuted to the ground separately. About 400 female candidates initially were screened and 40 were called to Moscow to undergo interviews and medical and other tests. Valentina Tereshkova was one of five women selected on Feb. 16, 1962.
Tereshkova launched into space June 16, 1963, aboard Vostok-6 using the call sign Chaika (чайка), or Seagull. Her mission was part of the second group flight launched by the Soviets, with fellow cosmonaut Valery Bykovsky launching two days earlier aboard Vostok-5. During Tereshkova’s first orbit, the two spacecraft came within three miles of each other and the two cosmonauts talked to each other by radio, before drifting apart and completing their separate missions. She circled the Earth 48 times over three days and made a successful parachute landing June 19.
